ohhhh a Lull....nice...really nice. I played a 4 hr gig the other night. Half the night was the 79 T-Bird the second half I used the fender Aerodyne. The "Dyne" is really one sweet bass. A keeper for sure. A welcome change in weight and comfort. Had to turn up 3 more full numbers from the Tbird settings. Bah ...single coil...sounds mighty good though. Lull makes a nice t bird ya know.....:-)

Yeah, but the ergos on the Birds aren't my thing. That Lull is 7.8 lbs so it is incredibly comfy. I prefer the tone on my PJ, but it does get that classic JJ sound. The only other thing is that the control layout can get in my way as I'm used to slapping fairly far back towards the bridge. Plenty of room on my Foderas, with the Lull I sometimes whack the volume knob. I'm sloppy...

I know this is a bass, but I have a similar question on guitars as well. I have always strung my guitars with one half loop through the tuning peg. "Minimalist". This is wound around several times. Is there any advantage to this set up with all those coils? More tone, sustain, anything?

I resumed playing bass in summer of 2011. I had one bass and a practice amp. Today I have four basses, the practice amp, an Ampeg VT-22 combo, a Mesa Boogie 2x15 and an Ampeg SVT. I scour Craigslist daily.

You want a good witness point at the nut and enough tension to avoid buzzing. I use enough string to wrap until the string exits the tuning post and heads to the nut at the base of the post. When I change strings, I cut the new strings to the same length as the old ones so it is consistent.

Mike made his name as a repair guy, and he makes great instruments. He pleks every one he builds (as does Fodera now), and they have very consistent feel and action up the neck. Plus he's a really nice guy to boot.

not the tension on the string, but the downward force across the nut. Tension maybe wasn't the right word.

Depending on the instrument the angle of the string across the nut varies and if you don't wrap low you can get buzzing. This is why non-angled headstocks have to use string trees.

Reason I ask is that there is this funonoma called "top wrapping" on gibson tune-o-matic guitars which claims amongst its benefits, world peace, extra sustain and changes to string tension.

The reason I top wrap is so that I can get the tailpiece screwed down tight against the body. Otherwise, strings hang up on the backside of the bridge.
It does seems to reduce overall string tension a bit though... which makes NO sense, because strings must be at a specific tension for a specific pitch...

I have the TP screwed to the deck also and have never encountered that problem- but I have tried top wrapping. I just had the low E jumping out of the saddle (break angle). My top wrapping lasted one unsuccessful night.

Ive seen an explaination for the string tension thing that did make some sense...involved suspension bridges......
