First Guitar

I just bought my first electric guitar last week, so I felt like sharing. I've been enjoying the recent amp threads, but you guys live in a different world than I do!

I've had an old acoustic for years and been taking lessons finally. I picked up an Epiphone Les Paul Standard from Craigslist and a $30 Crate to go with it.

Maybe 10 years from now my guitar posts will include comments on $1,000 amps and riders. For now my repertoire includes Meatplow and Everlong and that's about it.

You thought there was a slippery slope with Porsche's? Nice get, enjoy it.

Oh you're gonna like that puppy. Make this next on your list...(not that I'm partial to the odd shape or anything....)

Good stuff. I've had a guitar in the basement for year, only pick it up once in a while. I have the itch to get back into it and think I'm picking up a $100 VOX practice amp. Love the big gear but I'd have to wear earplugs, especially until I can play halfway decent.

I've had some lulls in my interest in playing. Sometimes I'd go for months without touching my guitars. But then I went on a buying spree and have found that spending ridiculous money on more gear makes me want to play more. I've really gotten my chops back over the last two years and am trying to get a band thing going here to start playing out again.

A slippery slope indeed.

I like the goofy Gibson. Looks like a SeaGull too. Nice. (but of course it's a sea gull yer in Canada)

indeed a slippery slope...

Get your guitar setup by a pro and you may find that a pickup replacement is in order. I recommend Wolfe's Marshallheads.

It's definetly a slippery slope. I bought an Epiphone Dot back in the late 90's(Korean) and never played it until 4 months ago. Since I started playing it I've done some mods as follows.

I first installed new pickups, Gibson 57s along with a Dr Vintage early spec wiring harness. This made a world of difference in sound. I then wanted better playability and brought it to well known luithier in Chicago for a pro set up. After consulting with him I had a bone nut installed and had the guitar refretted. All I can say is wow, this thing sounds and plays awesome. The fret board is just unbelievable. I'll next have a new bridge installed. I've got a few bucks in to it, but I really like the guitar.

So it can definetly be a slippery slope.

Enjoy

Dean

Awesome!! Take heart. I've been playing for 30 years and I suck. Literally. But I love to play and I love some good tone.

I tried to learn the acoustic intro to Widespread Panic's "Airplane" last night and finally gave up. I suck, but I love playing guitar. ;)

I suck at it, too. I think I need to make some more unnatural noises with my tele.

Drdogface 12-11-2012 10:03 AM

My stable...mostly tenor banjos...plus Gibson ES 140

I was going to make a banjo joke until I realized I've been listening to a lot of Bela Fleck lately.

I need to take an 'aresenal' pic sometime. It'll be difficult as it spans two walls and the floor. I think I have a problem.

PS I suck too, but buying more guitars lessens the sting of that knowledge. :D

Hey Drdogface nice banjos, we got a picker in our mist. Just load those in your truck (when it gets there)
n head on down to the bluegrass hoedown. They will park you right up front!

Cheers Richard

Richard,

Thanks for the invite ;) Those are four string/tenor banjos used mostly for trad jazz but I have played with guitar players who play country stuff. I don't usually play in the keys they use, Dmaj, Amaj, etc., but I sorta transpose chords on the fly if I ain't had too much to drink. Picking single string is a little harder to do on the fly. We usually play in C, G, F, Bb, etc. Horn players hate shape keys.

Okay, so far I've added two bars of Rock You Like a Hurricane to my repertoire and my guitar teacher gave me the Master of Puppets intro to work on. Sure doesn't sound like the original yet, but I've been having fun so it's all good.

Head keep on taking lessons and enjoying your new passion. Here is my last guitar a 04 Strat 50th anniversary. Got it the year I turned 50. Can't profess to be a player but it makes a good conversation piece wall hanger.http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/12/12/ajuqygyt.jpg

Here's my first guitar in 1988, a few years after I painted it, slapped a Kramer neck and Floyd Rose on it and a DiMarzio humbucker I bought from Greg Howe back before he hit it big. It started out as a red Hondo Strat.
