Need to Rent enclosed car hauler in North Ca.

I need to rent an enclosed car hauler either commercially or privately in the Sacramento/North Ca. area. I'll need it for about a week to pick up a car in Phoenix and trailer it back to Sac.

If anyone knows of a place to rent one or has one they will rent to me I'm likely interested. Of course I would be responsible for any damage...

PM me or email me if you have one or just post if you know of a commercial rental for such a thing.

Richard,

You may or may not recall that I bought and paid for that Classic 49 Chevy truck form Chocaholic in Georgia. Been trying to get it shipped to North Ca but no one seems to want to schedule it even though I accept their quote. I have since found out that some of these places will give a low quote and then put you on standby for how ever long.

So, I got a quote from Union Pacific rail to go to Phoenix where Joe Aksa lives and it's doable if I can get a trailer to pick it up with. Rail to North Ca is a lot more for some reason. Joe is willing to receive it. I could put it on a Uhaul but those are open which I'd rather not do as this truck is 99% resto'd. I thought about flying to Phoenix and driving her home but feel a little goosey about driving such an old gal that 800+ miles.

So...that's the deal. Mike (Choc) is being a real stand up guy being willing to hold her there until I can put something together.

Man that is one beautiful truck. I do remember the deal going down, it was the route that through me off. Sounds like the brethren are stepping up to help get it to its new home.

Here is a road going example ( read unpampered) I shot here the other day.

Cheers Richard

Mark;

I shuddered to think of that truck on the train. The kids on the rez use the passing trains for target/rock throwing practise.

How does the train thing work?

I would not have it on an open flat bed rail car. These days they are in a box car type thing that has slats in the sides. That's the only way I'd go for it.

Come on for christsake You can't drive it 800 miles on back roads? It's a stovebolt
Farm boys been keeping those things going with bailing wire since 1929

Besides your route probably has more pelicans per mile then any other in the US

Dan,
That subject did come up and I'm considering it. I'm not a mechanic at all though and things can easily go wrong on such a long trip. If nothing did it would be a blast...still under consideration as it's becoming hard to find a commercial place to rent an enclosed trailer. A Uhaul open trailer would likely be fine..one way rental...

Mark,
Hope I didn't come off as a jerk but really it's the simplest most durable engine ever
If you can set points and change the fuel pump I thing you've got it covered

Dan,
No...I didn't take any offense at all. It is a great temptation... I do agree it's the most durable engine they ever made. All those parts are pretty new too, point, plugs, fluids, etc.

Mark, put it on an open trailer...... It will be fine, it's just a damn truck...... I've hauled my 944 thousands of miles on an open trailer, and have picked up more/worse chips when driving it.....

Actually that's my current plan. Dlrs use some form of sticky shelf paper to protect cars being shipped to them... comes right off. I may do that too...or may just fly and drive her home.

Boy getting the truck to Phoenix sure does bring it into driving range. Hard to resist.

The are some good guys there in the Phoenix area, then the Prescott Pose to the north for issues on the first day on the road. Lots of big open country after that.
Plus I do see a fit on Highway 395 in eastern Cal. for your truck, a real country road.

Give yourself 4 or 5 days, give the truck a through going over and check out there, put together a box of spares and tools, cell phone and AAA card , then make a cruise of it camping or staying at cool places along the way. Plan on short mileage days, big on fun. What a way to bond with your new truck.

Cheers Richard

I think for fuel mileage purposes and maybe a bit easier along with less rental fees, could you pick the trailer up in Phoenix instead of trailering for 1600 miles, it would only be the 800 miles home.

That is exactly what I would do with a Uhaul car trailer.

I'm still tempted to fly and drive her back too. Tools, phone, extra belts, a gas can or two... it would be fun. From Phoenix to Wickenburg to I-40 and look for another back road west. Rt 395 on the back side of the Sierra is gorgeous...exit to So. Tahoe then Rt 50 home.

How tall are you, Mark?

I love these old trucks, but they lack a certain ergonomic sensibility.

I'd drive it from Az, be delighted to, but I'd know what I'm in for.

Mechanically, as long as the tires and brakes are good, the truck will be slow but fine.

Hi Paul,
I'm about 5'11" I guess and 195# (down from 216). The brake system is basically all new as are tires. Fluids, points, plugs, new. I was just on Google maps to find a route on back roads...all good until you get to Vegas...Take 95 North from there and cross over to 395.

This actually makes it sound like a fun experience. With time, some tools and a few Pelican phone numbers along the way for peace of mind, it could be a memorable "bonding" experience.

It's not uncomfortable, but could get tiring going hours on end. I like the idea of a mapped out route with frequent, interesting stops along the way. I suspect you'll meet a lot of interesting folks also. As described, it's bone simple mechanically and all in good working order.

Admittedly, I've not been encouraging Mark to drive it from here (cross-country), but from Arizona...could be pretty cool.
