Today is a sad day

I had the pleasure of having two wonderful Wyandotte roosters. They were named Wilbur and Vincenzo. Unfortunately they met their demise last night. I was amazed how friendly and social they were. They would come when called and allow to pick them up and pet them. Vincenzo would even crow on command. The back yard doesn't seem the same. Has anyone else have/had Wyandotte Roosters?

I am thinking an owl they would usually stay in an area that was safe at night, but they must have been wandering last night.

Lots of predators on the East Coast. If you get more, you will need a good pen for the evenings.

Sorry about your roosters.

We have never lost any chickens to hawks or owls, but occasionally a fox burros under the fence and steals one.

It's funny with about 6 chickens in an inside 6'x'6 enclosure with access to a 6'x10' outside covered enclosure we were getting about 1/2 a dozen eggs a week. The bottom of the inside door broke and haven't fixed it in 3 months because the chickens are able to get out in the yard through the hose stall and are laying eggs at a rate of about 1 1/2 dozen a week, just being able to peck and scratch at the ground while still safe because the foxes won't get near the horses.

I live in Wyandotte, MI. so I really should have some Wyandotte roosters! My father had pet Mallard ducks for many years, but then a neighbor's dog killed the,. They were his pets for many years and he was heartbroken.

Soory to hear of the loss of your friendly roosters (which is almost unheard of). I lost 2 hens to a couple foxes last fall, they scatterd my flock over 5 acres. It took me a while to get the survivors back inside the run. I have 12 hens and 1 rooster at the time and get 6-8 eggs a day. I give them to my neighbors...I can only eat so many eggs.

I'm sorry to hear it Scott. Talk with Mark (Buckterrier), he's got some and built them a really nice coop. I'm sure he can help.

Thanks for the kind words Shaun. Yes so sorry to hear about your roosters Scott. Mine met his demise this past summer. Elvis survived a hawk attack when he was young but did not survive Maxx. Nursed him back to health but he did loose an eye. He wasn't very friendly as yours were. He was a Silver Campine. I only free range mine when I'm around and lock them up at night with the cold weather. My coop is kinda a Fort Knox. Here's a pic. If you have any questions please send a PM.

I'm sorry to hear it.
My grandparents had Wyandottes, along with some other breeds. The roosters never lived past two years. They get tough if they get too old. But what a life. All they had to do was eat and have sex for two years.
