air roofing nailer

One of the jobs on the to do list is to install a new shingle roof on the detached garage. I'm thinking about picking up a used coil nailer to make the job a little easier/faster. I am familar with Bostich , Porter Cable and Paslode but I'm sure there are others. Seems like around here ( Atlanta ) they are available around $100.00 on Craigslist. I have a commercial 60 gallon compressor and lots of air hose so that is covered. So anything specific to know about these ? Are the nails brand specific or generic ? I doubt I'll use it after this project so used is the way to go. So what is your experience with these ?

Im not sure what bands are available there but get a good one. Then you should be able to sell it on again for close to what you paid for it.
Do you know any builders? If you do ask them what they use.

The nails can be generic or brand specific. But like most things you get what you pay for.

I used a Bostich years ago when I built a small brick walled garage in my back yard. I used it to build the frame walls and roof.
I rented it for the weekend and it was worth every penny.

The size of the nail head flange (with consistent penetration and substrate material) is what keeps the shingle in place.
I don't like particle board in general.

Since you're in the south, a lighter complimentary color will keep the thing cool in the summer.

john70t yes I will be using a lighter color, something in the brown/tan range. Lived in Florida for 18 years learned real quick how much roof shingle color changed temps in the house.

Our Senco guns have worked very well. Typically the other makes you mention are good for most things. I am most disappointed with 18 ga brad nailers nowadays, even though you can pick up brand names for cheap, they're now a throw away item. Porter Cable and Hitachi being the latest brands to bite the dust......just past warranty.

Buy the coil roofer from Harbor Fright. I normally would not suggest this, but the one we have have been through hell with my men. We don't use it all the time, they guys know it was a cheap through away gun and they are not very nice to it, but it has held up really well. its going on three years. We need a roofing nailer to finish up something and I just did not feel like coming back tomorrow or dive back to the shop. HF was about two miles away. For 59.99, we scored big on this one.

I've got a Ridgid brand nailer that you can borrow (that I purchased off CL a couple years ago to use for roofing a screened in porch I added), and a box of nails left over from that job that I'll let go cheap.

I'm on the far side of Lawrenceville now - Grayson - but can meet you somewhere near 85 (Duluth?) if you're interested.

Mark that is a very generous offer thank you, I might take you up on it. Not going to do this until spring but I'll let you know.

I see a number of them come through the pawn shop. My town seems to be in Bostich country but I get a few other brands also. I'm a bit far for you to come and borrow one.

My father in law is a contractor and uses Bostich exclusively, they get used and abused and very rarely break. You can also find nails anywhere. I had a Senco finish nailer and it was sometimes a challenge to find nails.
