Boxster with (non-repairable) title
Anybody have any experience with cars titled "non-repairable" ?
I came across this last night, a 2000 boxster with 45k miles . The car was parked in a garage that had a light fire, the soft top got damaged plus a lot of other minor ( to me anyway) damage . There is no chassis damage or electrical damage. With a asking price of $2800 I initially thought "rally car" but even that has to be registered for the street which a non-repairable titled car from what I read can ever will never be able to register. Is it possible to dispute this non-repairable title ? any other thoughts appreciated.

many guys have made a life out of fixing up salvage title vehicles. amazing how little damage it takes to total a motorcycle. just a few quick fixes and some ebay parts and you're ready to go.
does "non-repairable" mean something different? i don't know the laws in canada. it's really just a gamble.

thanks for the reply.
From my understanding salvage = can be rebuilt and registered again non-repairable = can only be dismantled for parts , no parts of the chassis can be used to repair another car ( can only be sold for scrap metal) . I would post some pictures of the car but I am having trouble with loading pics on pelican today. The car is in really pretty nice condition, the main work it needs in the top and paint work. |

No so sure we can advise you, as laws on this vary from state to state, and I doubt they have any bearing on Canada.

buy it; sell it to someone in a state (province?) who can title it easily
maybe even buy it back after that... |

you can't get comp or collision auto insurance on a salvage title car if this matters to you.

N/R will be following that VIN around forever.
A repaired salvage will have Rebuilt listed with the VIN. Insurance probably assumed the frame was weakened by the fire. I don't think they look at the cars sometimes.

$2800 for the car
$3000 for the trailer to get it to the track and back. the industrious type, with a lot of free time, could make some money parting the thing out on ebay.

It will also matter which state declared it non repairable. I think you can register it in some states which don,t brand titles ,then move it to another and the title is clean again. It,s called title washing. a carfax would still show the writeoff though.

It does not make sense to destine this car to the metal crusher, I have seen cars bent into a U that had a rebuildable salvage title. This car is easily fixable into a fun track car.

No matter what, its a steal..I would buy it fast....Figure out what to do with it later...I don't see why they labeled it like they did ?

Depends on state law. Can't go wrong buying that Boxster for $2800. As stated above, if it can't be used on the street, it is a great track toy, and worth many times $2800 in used parts. |

My 993 is a salvage title car. The insurance company is more than happy to take my money. The point is you are paying insurance on a normally valued car...

I would need to know it was still running. I could imagine a Boxster with a blown motor from a failed IMS bearing being burned as an insurance job

Check with your provincial Ministry of Transport. Ontario's site says:
Irreparable Vehicle has been written-off as a total loss. Can only be used for parts or scrap. Cannot be driven again in Ontario. They also have Salvage, Rebuilt brands etc which can drive again. Ian

Ian's input is correct. AFAIK you can only part the car out.
I've come across cars that appeared perfect that were branded the same as this Boxster. Flood damage=fire hazard=non-rebuildable....for example. This applies to Ontario. May be different for your Province but most likely isn't. However somebody else might be able to bring this car back to the street....

Thanks for the reply's.
To anybody that knows these cars does this issue with a new non-programed key not being able to start the car sound correct. This is the description in the add- 2000 Porsche Boxster, 2.8, 5sp, for parts ONLY it has cosmetic damage that is NOT worth repairing. Was in a garage fire (no mechanical or electrical damage-soft top and cover melted and burned the paint, windshield, mirror, seat covers etc.-see below for the complete list) It was in good running order and was stared and driven after the fire. Insurance company designated it as ‘none reparable’ it cannot be registered . Keys were stolen during towing I purchased new key from the factory with new microprocessor, the buyer will be responsible for programming the key at the dealership (it is 60$ plus towing) the car cannot be started without programming the key. Don't buy it without hearing it run. Make it the final contingent of sale. You pay to flatbed it to dealer and program/sync the key. When it runs, transfer final funds.
It's a good deal. Worry about what to do with it after. It would make a great track car if nothing else
