Irony: NY Newspaper Attacks Gun Owners, Hires Armed Security Guards

The Journal News is Armed and Dangerous | The Rockland County Times

Hope this can stay non-political, but I am probably drinking some strange cool-aide myself?

I just enjoyed the irony of a newspaper attacking gun owners and then taking umbridge to a returned volley, and THEN turning to an armed security company to protect itself when it becomes scared. Is that not what the police are supposed to do?

I do not get this mindset.

Link didn't work so I found another:

The Journal News of West Nyack, New York doesn't want fellow New Yorkers to be allowed to own guns, and what better way to show support for its stand against guns than to hire armed guards to patrol its offices?

The suburban Westchester Journal News made itself the center of a controversy by publishing the names and addresses of thousands of New York's legal gun owners in an interactive map on its website. It was accompanied by an article supportive of "a raft of new gun laws" at the state and federal level.

In response to the paper's article, several bloggers decided to create an interactive map of employees of the Journal News.

The paper then moved to up the ante and announced it would publish even more names and addresses of New York's law-abiding firearm owners.

In the meantime, however, it appears that the Journal News has decided to hire armed guards to protect its offices.

The Rockland County Times reported Tuesday that the Journal News had hired RGA Investigations, a private security company, to patrol its offices.

These guards "are armed and will be on site during business hours through at least January 2, 2013," Rockland Times reports.

Clarkstown Police say that Journal News editor Caryn McBride had "previously reported a large amount of negative correspondence in response to the media outlet's publication of local gun permit holders." McBride gave police an email from "an unknown subject" who she said threatened the paper.

The New York State Rifle and Pistol Association has called for a boycott of the Journal News' advertisers.

Singling out Best Buy, CVS, IKEA, and Target for special attention, the group asked citizens to state that "you will no longer patronize any advertiser who uses Gannet (the Journal News’ parent company) until and unless that advertiser withholds further ads until Gannett takes down the pistol licensee Web page and ceases attacking lawful firearm ownership. In particular, contact advertisers with whom you do business, and who may know you personally."

Typical of one side of our political hacks in this country. Do everything they can to take away weapons but "We need them for our personal safety. Do as we say, not as we do" type of mentality...

How and why people keep voting them in is beyond me...

I think newspapers should be reporting the news, not making it.

This lady is probably some Vegan, tree-hugging, radical anti-abortionist, anti gun, Prius driving, man hating lesbian with local political aspirations that is trying to garner attention, and to further her one woman cause.

I needed this laugh after visiting the whacko HL thread in PARF.

I believe the stunt was for publicity purposes from the start.

Sadly I totally agree with the above. What happened to the day where news outlets reported the news instead of trying to make news to up their ratings? Sorry but this is NOT progress...

When you have 24/7 news coverage you have to make up SOMETHING to keep people watching. Sadly this NY paper is probably the same deal, their hack paper is now getting national attention. It's ultimately all about money.

I agree, the press should report the news! Good stuff as well as bad. I remember our local paper used to carry good news stories from the local schools and churches. Things The Scouts were doing to improve lives. All good. Now, all negative stuff.

Also the reason we read the Houston Post in the 60's/70's. Not all negative stuff.

As far as locallizing, I have Vegan/Vegetarian, tree-hugging, etc friends who feel this is all BS. They agree law abiding civilians should have a way to protect themselves.

Heck, IF you were to show up on my farm you would find this tree-hugger protecting his stands of high dollar harvestable forest with weapons, moreso because the local popo refuses to address crimes that would require them to actually do some paperwork or get out of their vehicle.

I dont see it as ironic, they came out against ordinary people owning guns, and then hired trained specialists with guns to protect them.

Gun owners are trying to make a secret of the fact that they have weapons permits.

The newspaper is not trying to make a secret of the fact that they have armed guards.

Now if the paper had guys with guns hiding in the bushes waiting to take out anyone they were afraid of I would agree there is hypocrisy here.

Would you like your expensive personal items being public knowledge? Any literate thief now knows which area homes he should break into. I make no secret of what I have amongst people that I know, it's nothing to be ashamed of. But I want that information published about as bad as I want the number of tvs, computers, and iPhones in my home.

I do enjoy, however, the insinuation that these "exposed" gun owners are "hiding in the bushes to take out anyone they were afraid of". Obviously you believe that these "journalists" are more deserving of protection than law abiding citizens.

was there really a point in the Journal doing that? Was it necessary?

They are getting what they deserve.

CynDee Royale (yes, that's how she spells it) - if Snooki (?) had a mom on TV, it would be CynDee- look at her.

There's an old book series called the Great Brain. At one point the 12Y.O. kid opens his own newspaper because his dad won't let him work at his Dad's newspaper.

Ends up with a discussion of what is news and what isn't. Its influenced what news articles I might click on when I end up on a news site.
