latest excellence- tons of typo's and editorial issues?

Did anyone else notice the insane number of typo's, mixed up paragraphs in different articles and the letters section?

Not surprising. I'm hearing it more and more on television commercials as well.

The president was reflecting on his childhood a few months ago and said: "Me and my sisters". Must drive English teachers up the wall.

Pete (the editor) got a different gig. My CRS prevents me form recalling what it was exactly. Something to do with the PCA rag or some such. I think... Don't rely on my memory.

gint 01-01-2013 07:35 AM

Found it. There was a thread on 914world.

A message from Manny Alban, PCA National President:

As you know, we have been working diligently to choose the next Editor of Porsche Panorama. As a matter of fact, it has taken the better part of this year to identify the right person as we move into the next phase of communications with our members and advertisers.

With this in mind, it is with great pride that I announce the appointment of Pete Stout as the new Editor of Porsche Panorama and Director, Integrated Communications.

A little background on Pete: He comes to PCA from Excellence Magazine, where he has served as Editor-in-Chief since 1998. He is a graduate of Westmont College where he earned dual BAs in English and Communication Studies. He is also a graduate of Bob Bondurant Advanced Road Racing Course and the Porsche Sport Driving School. The club is very excited and proud to have a candidate of Pete's experience and caliber taking us forward.

You will notice the dual title that Pete assumes. The EC, along with the Integrated Communications Committee, felt strongly that moving forward, the role of the Editor needed to be expanded to reflect the communication needs of our membership and sponsor/advertisers. We feel that we have addressed these in the new role for which we interviewed.

Pete succeeds current Panorama Editor-in-Chief, Betty Jo Turner, who will retire at the end of the December after serving more than 42 years. Betty Jo has garnered an immense amount of respect from those in the industry and beyond. We will forever be indebted to her for her incredible work ethic and loyalty to PCA.

Pete officially takes over on January 1, 2013, but is working with Betty Jo between now and the end of the year to ensure a smooth transition. Please join me in welcoming Pete to the PCA family.

You think they might have an opening for a proof reader?

Joe Bob 01-01-2013 10:08 AM

Probably a backlash from the staff from the departure...doan worry, should get worse.

And no Chris Harris this month, or the great photos on the last page.....makes me wonder.

kshafer1 01-01-2013 12:16 PM

Guess I picked a bad time to subscribe. I have not even received my first issue. Always a little late to the party - story of my life...

Typo's?

LOL

"Excellence" was expected?

MikeD930 01-01-2013 06:30 PM

I hope Chris Harris stays around. I just resubscribed a few months ago before I found out about Pete leaving for PCA gig. I am not a member of the PCA so I may consider joining PCA to get their mags and perhaps cancel Exellence if they dropped Mr. Harris.

The Porsche community needs independent voices, and Excellence Mag is one of only a few that provide that. Excellence also covers a wider gamut of Porsche topics than Pano does - after all, Panorama is the voice of corporate and marketing PAG. Stout may change the scope of Pano, but the member-only mag can only go so far in its coverage and must do so within PAG's limits.

I prefer more, not fewer magazines on the topic of Porsche cars.

Panorama is a schill magazine that marches lock step with PCNA. If you want a mag that goes against the grain....try Roundel the BMW club newsmagazine.

Pano was one of the last to drop Motor Meister as an advertiser if I remember correctly.

saxen 01-01-2013 08:23 PM

i believe they are going through some major changes, i have been reading the mag since i was 9 years old (yes 9) i will keep supporting them, they have been giving me years of great reading!

They sell lot's of ads. As for the tech question answers to the editor, Sorry guys, I know Bruce Anderson can't be answering these. There are so many incorrect answers it's disgusting. Once again they sell alot of ads. Nice article on Champion Porsches latest creation, the million dollar RSR. $60,000 dollar paint job???????????? And it would have been nice to read how much the car weighed. I hope there "major changes" bring some credability.

+1...
Very well stated - ...Tooo many adverts....Nice pictures and good classifieds if you're looking for a P-Car - I have though been through P car's factory tour many times - in print that is.

Cheers

I respectfully disagree with your statement. PAG has absolutely no control over PCA. NONE. It's simple as that. In fact, I've directed our Bylaws Review Committee to institute a section in the bylaws that would require a full membership (not BOD) vote if PCA were to be 'bought out' or 'controlled' by some entity other than it's volunteer elected leadership.

I believe that by bringing Pete on board, we're sending a message of how we would like to see Panorama evolve. The decision was quite simple. Much like the cars we drive, we wanted the best, so we hired Pete. I can even say that he's probably going to have more editorial freedom at Pano than he did prior. While a complete change won't happen in the first issue, by the end of 2013 I think you'll be very happy with the results.

I'm a long time Excellence reader. I have the full collection is storage boxes (yes, back when it was called Porsche for a few issues). I don't think Excellence is leaving us anytime soon. I also read Total 911, 911 and Porsche World, and pretty much any Porsche magazine I see on the newstand (also love reading Road and Track, Sports Car Market and Grassroots Motorsports).

Flat out, Pano is a boring magazine. I have met so many cool folks in the Porsche club(Manny included) that it baffles me that Pano is such a bad read. It is nothing more than a glorified sales brochure. I just had the opportunity to read a couple of old Roundels that a friend dropped off and I was amazed. Roundel is about the people and the cars. They realize that folks work on their own cars and do not all drive the latest model.

Manny, I have to respectfully disagree. Pano reads like a dry press release issued by PCNA. But, the addition of a new editor has me crossing my fingers that this will soon be rectified.

Manny Alban 01-02-2013 05:51 AM

I'm not arguing about the editorial content, just the statement that PCA is controlled by PCNA or Porsche AG. There is so much behind the scene politics within the club that will never be printed (due to professional courtesy as well as it really won't be productive), but suffice to say, I never received one hate mail or phone call regarding this change of editors. However, I do get hate mail when they serve chicken two nights in a row during Parade (one is usually from the wife).
