Anyone want 10 Opel GT's???
Looks like someone is into their Opels! I Just came across this CL ad and had to share. This guy in the Mojave is selling 10 of his Opel GT's for $10K. Might be a good deal for anyone that is into these cars and wants a fun restoration project. If only I had more room and money, I might actually consider this...
OPEL GT s |
a whole fleet of Lemons racers!!!!

There used to be one in Long Beach that ran with Ferrari logos on it

"Stored" is such a strong word.

I could totally get my friend divorced if I told him about that deal.

What if it were 10 Fieros for 10k?
|
It's just alarming the quantity of the same car this guy has.. you'd figure he'd stop at 2... or 3... or 4... MAX. But 10? Come on. I'm thinking that 2 of these would be great restorations and the others can be sold off as parts. Anyone have any first hand experiences with these? Nonetheless 80 HP stock doesn't sound too impressive even though it is a light car!

But you know, I always liked their body shape...the mini Corvette look. |
My first "fun" car was a 1973 Opel GT. I did a lot of work on it (Weber carb, exhaust, suspension - even painted it myself), and it was a lot of fun, but in the end they are pretty crude cars. The mechanicals are based on the Manta, IIRC.
Back when I had mine there wasn't much that could be done outside of standard Opel parts (which have become very scarce now), but I always thought it would be fun to build a really cool Opel with a modern engine, suspension, brakes, etc. A friend knew a guy who put a 944 engine in one. At the time I owned mine (mid-'80s), I thought the twin cam Toyota Corolla GTS engine would have been cool (since it was front engine-RWD at the time). Opel GTs only weighed about 2100 lbs, so it wouldn't take a huge engine to make it a really fun car. They only came with about 90-100 hp from the factory. OK, I'm rambling... |

WAIT!! is that a military M416 trailer behind that one opel? i'm emailing him!!

Iroc, just keep on rambling, you are on the same track that I"m thinking.
Put some modern performance underpinings and you end up with an unusual, nice looking small sports car. Whats not to like. Cheers Richard |
darn..it was a M416 trailer. but it was not for sale. so close, yet so far.

This is too much $$$. A quick Craigslist search in SoCal gets you tons of $1k or less non running examples looking about the same.
I wonder how one of these would do with a S2000 drivetrain? A coworker had an early 70s celica with that transplant and it screamed. G |
