Neighbors held a memorial this morning for the animal and placed pine boughs along the street.
COME ON, MAN!

(edit: written before I read the story discussion this Estes park elk - really should RTFA first one of these days)
Remember when that huge bull elk got poached in Estes Park back in the 90s? I recall they had to jail the perp for his own protection. Lynching was discussed... They take their furry critters seriously up there! (in no way - no how - am I condoning poaching)

Back in May 2010, I was driving from Denver to Colorado Springs and several times along the way I had to stop because of herds of elk on the highway...

They should relocate some of our wolves down to Boulder that would thin them out pretty quick. The Granolas can get a chance to live with them.
I remember Sampson in Estes Park. Bad JUJU to shoot pet Elk ! ![]()

I never realized what kind of wacky-ass place Boulder is. Now I know.
Note to self: stay out of CO.

While I do believe that having a memorial for an elk is ridiculous, I think the cops should be disciplined for this.
Hunting is serious business out here. There are designated seasons, game units, and licenses that regulate the sport. (Since being regulated, the elk population in Colorado has increased to a healthy level which is good for our economy). Having cops popping off caps in someone's front yard in the middle of the city is an insult to ethical hunters, and obviously an affront to the tree huggers in Boulder who PAY THE COPS' SALARY. Clearly these guys wanted a trophy, but if these idiotic cops don't like Boulder or the politics there, then get a job in a more conservative community.

<--------Life Member Rocky Mtn Elk Foundation...I LOVE,LOVE,LOVE to hunt them. They are great animals and amazingly quiet (and loud) in the forest. But, I'm sorry...the cop's a poacher in no uncertain terms. I'm sure he's gonna next come up with he felt threatened (and had to walk back 50 yds to get his gun). Of course it'll all be swept under the rug cuz authorities have different rules than the rest of us!

"According to a Boulder police news release, the officer was on routine patrol around 11 p.m. Tuesday when he said he saw the elk and believed it was injured. He said the elk was limping and that some of the elk's antlers had been broken off and judged the animal had to be put down, according to police.
The elk was in a yard when the officer shot and killed it with one shot from a shotgun. The officer did not inform dispatchers he intended to shoot the animal and did not file a report about the incident." Looking at the picture of the officer with the elk, I can't see a broken antler..... Cop could loose his job.

Aside from the sad cop shenanigans posted, am I the only one thinking that large wild animals like these should not be domesticated around town? Either create serious pressure with a by draw backyard bow season for resident licensed hunters or take the animals and relocate them to the wild.

When I was landscaping in college in PA, my boss came across a cop stopping traffic for an injured deer. My boss taught meat cutting at a vocational school at night and got out to ask the cop what he was going to do with the deer. Cop said he wasn't allowed to use his service weapon for putting down injured animals. So my boss asked if he could do it and promised he'd make good use of the carcass and meat. Cop said ok, boss grabbed a pistol out of his glove box and that was that. It sounds kind of fishy for a cop to be putting down such a trophy elk in someone's yard.

Yea Elk don't get hurt eating popcorn and apples (organic apples) in back yards in Granolaville.
No offense to Boulder spent lots of time there in my youth, I even have some memories of them. ![]() The Cop must be held accountable and pay penalty including the trophy poaching fee.
