Is there any end in sight for the ammo shortage?

Even cheaperthandirt and cabelas seem to be drying up!

There is ammo available if you are willing to pay the price. Just in a local gun store and they had a pretty good and varied supply but the price was quite a bit higher than on line. $30 for box of 20 9mm jhp.

I think I saw some brand of 9 at Walmart this morning for $19.97. Four boxes of Federal 12 gauge I paid $26.40 with tax.

My 5.56 stock pile might have been a good investment

Cheaper Than Dirt is the biggest misnomer of all time. Even before they got stupid with pricing, they weren't cheap at all. Two weeks ago they tripled their prices on .223. If you went to their Facebook page and refreshed it, you could see them losing several likes per minute. Eff them. Will never buy from them, even if they do someday start to exemplify their name.

I stocked up on .223 years ago and will just stop shooting it until things calm down. Check out ammunitiontogo.com.

I searched here for "ammo shortage". Looks there is one every year or two, people post hysterical stuff here, then it fades away.

Sounds like an opportunity. ;)

All panic buying related to the election - 2008 and again last year. As soon as that ended and supplies were there, a lot of folks started buying more on a regular basis to get thru the next shortage.

I tried to stock up on 22 but my son goes thru a brick every range trip - still have 8 bricks of bulk I'm sitting on, but I am almost out of the better ammo I use for informal precision matches (CCI SV or Win SSHP). I also bought a 1911-22 (GSG) and a conversion kit for my FAL (which should be here soonish - all parts are completed now its just the production run... well worth the wait), so I can afford to shoot all day for $30 :) ... just like you could 10 years ago in the centerfire calibers :(

CCI stated they were shipping one million rounds of rimfire ammo a day ...

Ventura Spoon Show is next weekend.

Wish I could find some .223 locally. No where to be found, as even Walmart was out of everything but .380, .357 and .45 in 20 round boxes.

I've ordered 800 rounds of .223 and 600 rounds of 9mm from Cabella's but it's on backorder for 1-2 weeks. 2,000 rounds of .22 is on it's way.

4 years ago the exact same thing happened... deja vu

Rick Lee 01-05-2013 05:17 PM

There is no downside to stocking up on pistol ammo, if you have the guns for it and the prices are reasonable. Don't think the antis aren't planning to go after ammo too eventually. The shelf life of ammo is longer than humans live, so stock up when you can.

You can buy ammo at Wamart? Geez down here that would be unheard of...is there anything they don't sell?

Rick Lee 01-05-2013 07:38 PM

Wal-Mart is the largest firearms retailer in the US, they don't sell handguns and they usually have a pretty limited selection of long guns. So that's a ton of stores selling a ton of long guns to make them the biggest. Even the ones that don't sell guns at least sell ammo. There's not much you can't buy there. Mobil 1, Winchester White Box, case of beer, carton of smokes - what more does a man need?

weseeeee 01-05-2013 07:38 PM

It's due to an over reaction to news reports. Buy now if you have to have ammo or guns today. If not, wait it out, the ammo, guns and normal prices will come back in a month or two.

manbridge 74 01-05-2013 08:15 PM

Waiting is a good idea, but if you can't wait, ask Walmart type stores when their truck arrives and wait at the counter for it to get to shelf when they unload.

flatbutt 01-06-2013 05:32 AM

I'm just trying to buy parts but they're all tied up in manufacturing.

Chocaholic 01-06-2013 06:03 AM

Supply and demand. No different than any other business. Like oil, if mfg wants the price to climb, they limit production for a while.

cashflyer 01-06-2013 06:16 AM

I've bought many a case of ammo from these guys.
Long gun and handgun, and I have no complaints.

2 boxes of HP 9mm, 2 boxes of range FMJ 40, 2 boxes of HP 40, 2 boxes of .30-06= $251 with the shipping. Glad to see someone is making good $ in this economy. :)
