Oslo - The most expensive city in the world?

I've been a lot of places, but I just sat down for a $13 beer after a $212 cab ride and a $5 small bottle of water. If there is another, more expensive place in the world please let me know so I can avoid it!

Nice people tho.

That's crazy. Hotel lobby, I'm guessing? I've heard Zurich is expensive.

$212 for a cab? Did you get picked up in Denmark?

Houston is definitely not in that list. A cab ride from the Airport is about $80, 30 miles!

Must be a fantastic place to live though. One of my employees married a girl from Norway over Christmas and now he's moving there. He has a lot of good things to say about the people and the culture.

Our exchange student is from a town (Vinterbro) near Oslo and she is shocked at how inexpensive things are here. She loves to shop because everything is so cheap (to her)...

I'm surprised to see Caracas there. NYC is not too bad.... you just have to put in some effort.

Yeah, our hotel in NYC was charging $21 for well drinks. But, I have a happy hour app on the iPhone and it was not difficult at all to find normal (ok, just a bit above normal) priced drinks. Reminds me of when we were in Moscow when it was the most expensive city in the world, about 5 years ago. Coffee in the lobby was something like $14. It was $7 across the street at Sbux. Walk 2 blocks away from the hotel and it was .50

Our exchange student just smiled and said "yes, it is" when I asked her if Oslo is the most expensive city. She's quite a world traveler. When she arrived and we had our 1st pizza together as a family, the bill came to $25 for a large veggie pizza and 4 ice teas, she said in Oslo that meal would have been $150.

I had reverse shock when I went to university in England. I was calling my girlfriend back in the states to send me care packages of cigarettes.

What's she doing in Michigan? And is she tired of that question?

In my 20s, my first girlfriend in Chicago was an art student - she was Parisian. Every introduction was followed with "Wait - you're from Paris and you came to Chicago to study art?!"

I too have been to 6 of those cities, fortunately it has been for business so it hasn't been out of my pocket.

Where's Sao Paulo on the list? It costs a fortune to live comfortably in SP. Housing is through the roof and consumer goods are 2-3x what they are in North America...cars included. I wonder what they base this on...

It is the phenomenal climate that makes Oslo so attractive. I haven't been to Oslo, but have done my share of northern travels. You could not pay me to live anywhere north of 45 deg just for the lack of daylight in winters. I don't get expensive cold places like the East Coast in the US. I'd rent the first Uhaul and be on the way out of there.

Sellers will continue to price gouge as long as the people are willing to keep buying.

Just step into any movie theater, pro sports arena or vending area at any private venue.
