who is our resident veterinarian? cat with explosive vomiting.

this is rapidly becoming a deal breaker. i have a cool cat. she is a stone-cold killer. mice = good, song birds = not so good.

i can deal with it. she vomits the usual hairball. cool. she usually dry heaves long enough that (if i am home) i can pick her up and strategically allow her to barf on tile, or a hard surface. but she also has this episode of violent emptying of her stomach. last night, she was sleeping on my chest. i was in deep REM sleep. i heard the "blook" of one dry heave and instintively i chest bumped her away from my face. she landed at the foot of the bed and EXPLODED! it was dark but it sounded like a half pint of pea soup hit the ground. my bed is high so that stuff splashed everywhere. the smell! i cleaned everything. i put so much laundry into the wash and hit the button that says, "ultra-wash". i have thrown out furniture, rugs..clothing. my high end down comforter is going to the dry cleaner today. it is awful. we took her to the vet and they tell us she is healthy. i made another appointment. she was this close to coating my face with cat food..so glad i am a light sleeper.

i am beginning to feel like a hostage to puke. i am hoping this is a parasite issue. she craps like a champion, so i know she isnt impacted. if she would have puked on my face..i would have lost it.

Relegate him to outdoor duty where there are mice running everywhere.

Have you tried brushing her or using a lint roller to get loose hair off her ? If the Vet can't find anything wrong, try a Vet that specializes in cats only..Have you changed her diet at all before this was happening ? Maybe the food you always buy changed the ingredients enough to upset her stomach...
I hope she gets better....

One of my wife's cats does that. He'll gorge himself at the food bowl, walk away, barf his guts out, and turn around and head back to the trough. He'll be napping, wake up, puke, and just go right back to sleep as if nothing happened. Vet sez he's fine.

Sounds like your cat is suffering from cat-like symptoms.

Did he eat something he's not used to? One of my cats never barfs. Or at least he has the sense to do it outside, I guess. The other barfs once a week or so, such as how Thom describes above. But once or twice the barfer cat got into something he wasn't supposed to (maybe a lizard or bug?) and really tossed his cookies. Blech.

Our cat did this. He had infected lesions in the back of his throat that caused the vomiting. The vet said the real culprit was gum disease. This got progressively worse in his later years. He ended up losing half of his body weight as he ate less and less. At 14, the vet said the only possible solution was to pull all of his teeth (yes ALL of them). This was after two procedures where the cat was put under, then given steroid shots direct at the sit of the lesions. It was a tough choice, but we had him put down at that point. He would sit and stare at his food bowl knowing what the outcome would be if he ate.

Are you over feeding her? I had a similar situation but I don't think it was quite as bad as you are describing. I would fill buddy's bowl in the AM and he would just wolf it all down, ocassionally he would barf it up with out any fur balls. He's a long hair. I now regulate the amount of food that he has at any given time. He weighs 15.5 lbs and is generally let out for a few hours to roam his territory. I feed him @ 1cup of dry food each day, 1/3 cup in the morning, 1/3 cup later in the day, and 1/3 cup with 1 OZ. of wet food mixed in for dinner. Right now I am able to feed him 3 times a day without any inconvienience. Since I started this he hasn't lost it unless there is a fur ball in the way. He has also slowed down on his own as far as eating everything at one time. 1/3 cup 3 times a day is not much but seems to be the recommended total amount ( 1 cup a day) He gets a few of those fatty little treats that prevent fur balls at night when we're watching TV.

If she is eating birds and mice outside it might not be mixing well with what you are feeding her. It could be she is just eating to much.

Another idea would be that she may be allergic to whatever food you are using.

Hope you figure it out.

If she is eating mice/rats/rodents then I would say she got one that had been poisoned and had not died yet. We have a Main Coon who did that we figure and he would throw up some like that and also he lost a lot of weight but got over it. I would suggest looking at the FIRST puke pile in close detail to see what is in there. That is the one that matters. Later ones not so much. Cats have a tremendous ability to recover as my daughter, the vet technician has pointed out.

Cats seem to do that alot ours included. I see piles on the property sometimes on the driveway.

One of many reasons they are barn cats.

Cats in the house are strictly prohibited.

Its amazing how fast you wake up when you hear the "blook...blook...blook" noise. I used to sleep through neighbors playing rave music at 3am but the sound of "blook...blook...blook" would wake me in a second. Grab a newspaper and place it under the front end of the cat and keep moving the paper until they are done. A vet said they were just hairballs and to put a pat of butter on her food to ease digestion and try to comb her more.

Somebody needs to make a "blook-blook" alarm clock.

No cat owner will sleep through that!
