Help me deal with my neighbor, cat related
 

We have new neighbors. They have this damn cat that like to snoop around our property. the thing is, this cat like to crap on our deck, the kids sand box, and our fire pit. We had never had crap before and have had some wild cats around the canyon. there is a whole mountain side for this cat to go and do cat things, but its doesn't. he walks around all night and keep our motion lights on. How do I ask them to kill, I mean deal with this little thing. I know, its a cat, but I don't want my kids to play in siht or have to clean it up because they want a pet but have someone else pick up after them. I don't want to sound petty by talking about an outdoor car in a huge space. What if they reply "How do you know its our cat?" What do I say? I see him in the sand box. What do you guys think?

Calmly discuss it with your neighbour, hopefully they will understand that having cat poo in your kids sandbox is not acceptible. If not call animal services.

Trap it (humanely). Then return it to the owner. If it happens again drop it off at the humane society.

There's always the 'speak to them about it' thing. Should probably do that... Are you sure it is their cat? Have you witnessed it doing its business?

Cats in LA are allowed to pretty much roam free I guess. I have a newish cat in our neighborhood too but so far it hasn't been a problem. It's actually a friendly cat and sociable. Strange... It hasn't pooped in my yard or in places I would notice (my new patios and what not).

With that in mind, you could assume it is a feral cat if your neighbors are unwilling to do something about this health hazard they are 'responsible' for. In that case you can rent a safe trap from animal control I think and then offer them their cat back after you catch it. Is the cat tagged and registered? If not, I wonder if it is considered 'stray' or not. Assuming it is their cat; and you do trap it. You can always just turn it into a shelter and then tell them where they can get their cat.

Unfortunately cats beat fences.

I just dealt with this exact same problem -- this is an easy one.

First, you must do the right thing and approach your neighbor. Politely tell them what's going on and attempt to resolve the issue like adults.

If that doesn't work, you move on to step two (which is what I had to do). Obtain a humane animal trap (my vet had one I was able to borrow for free) and trap the cat. Take it to the animal shelter and declare it a stray animal. They'll take it from there.

In my case, the neighbors didn't put a collar or any identification on the animal so there was really nothing to discern it from a stray/feral cat. They actually freaked out for two days before deciding to check the shelter, at which point they were able to retrieve their cat. I have not seen the cat since then.

But do not just trap the cat first, you must do the right thing and talk to your neighbor about the problem.

Yeah, its their cat. they hold him sometimes when hanging out on their deck. I did see him scratching in the fire pit. I am just not sure how to approach them about an out door cat. I feel just the bitter old bastard telling kids to get off my lawn, or am I already there?

Similar situation with new neighbors and dogs. Sadly they did not react positively (no remorse for crap in the yard) and turned the conversation into a confrontation. They built a fence so the issue is mostly resolved, but the relationship is forever tainted. Good luck.

They are new neighbors. So the cat is feeling out the neighborhood.
Talk to them and than the trap to the animal shelter if needed.

Take picture of cat doing business in sandbox. Talk to neighboor. Show them picture. See what happens from there. Then go to the cat trap if no collar is present.

I spoke too soon.

A few minutes ago, my wife was walking the dog and passed a yard with a cat in it. With only a wrought iron fence between them, our dog just poked her nose into the yard to sniff at the cat, as the cat was pretty close to the fence. They just looked at each other. So much for her cat chasing skills. :rolleyes:
