It clearly says that it can't be registered for Road use:(

If I had the kind of coin these cars cost and wanted to drive it on public roads, I'd also pick up a white '86 Carrera, register it and then use its plates and registration on the 959 when on public roads. No cop is gonna know the difference and they never look at the VIN for regular traffic stops. Even a cop who knows about Porsches won't know 959s can only be imported under the "show and display" law. And they don't enforce federal laws anyway.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/dom.gif My exact same thoughts. Now, if you do something really bad and total it, you're screwed. But if you have the coin to buy a car like this, you have the coin to total out a car like this, too.

lol, that also means you have the coin for lawyers to go after.

if you get into an accident and hurt and/or kill someone, your insurance will figure out what happened and not pay out a penny. Because you defrauded them, and your liability coverage would be void.

And, if someone is seriously injured or killed, you'll also probably end up doing some time for insurance fraud, DMV fraud, etc.

So, I don't think we'll be seeing this car on the road soon. :)

Looks like someone put too much pressure in it.
Drop it about 20 psi and it won't look so swelled up. ;)

I saw a couple of them at Andial years ago before they were legal to drive here. Always wondered how many times the owners took them out for a quick spin.
The 959 is totally cool because it so ahead of it's time but realistically a new turbo is a better car in just about every way.

I don't know what it'll go for, but BJ should deduct $10K from their fee just for putting this sentence in their description:

"The Porsche 959 is one of the greatest sports cars ever to be assembled and touch the black asphalt which covers the roads on which the 959 is an undisputed champion."

Seriously, that's a winning entry in a bad writing contest.

It's got everything except "dark and stormy night"

Thanks... Imagine what it would cost to get that back on the road.

Just drop an LS2 in there, it'd be fun to what the purists flip out.

yeah, that's too bad, because that craftsman would have phrased it "the night, which was of darkness through which the stormocity traveled"

Donor car for the ultimate 914-6 conversion!

Is there a way to do 1/2 green font?? :-)

strupgolf 01-14-2013 01:06 PM

Why have THIS car at the BJ auction. They've been offering a few cars over the years under their "reserve" clause, even though they say all are offered at no reserve. This car is out of their league and it should be at another event/auction. Good point about driving it under the older 911 plates, they would'nt know otherwise. Plus, how DID this car get out of Porsches hands?

stealthn 01-14-2013 05:46 PM

I bet it doesn't sell...

Wyvern 01-18-2013 09:29 PM

wouldn't the "Auto Of Interest" now at least get the car on the road.

I would find a way . fake plates . or register a donor . or ..anything

this from Wiki
Canepa Design modifications

In 2003, Canepa Design initiated a 959 program. By making their own modifications to the 959's turbo, exhaust and computer-control systems, Canepa could enable the 959 to pass emissions requirements (thereby making it street-legal in the United States) and extract more power from the 959's engine. Total power output from the Canepa-modified 959 is 640 hp (477 kW) and 570 lb·ft (773 N·m) of torque, making the car capable of 3 second 0-60 times and top speeds in excess of 220 miles per hour (350 km/h).[10] Canepa also modifies the 959's lightweight magnesium wheels to allow the fitting of tires without the unique Dunlop Denloc bead, and fits a modern Michelin high-performance tire capable of handling the increased performance.
[edit]"Gates 959"

The "Gates 959" is an infamous car,[11] one of the Porsche 959s built in the mid-eighties, imported by Bill Gates to the United States in 1987. Gates' fellow Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen imported another one, as did Porsche collector Jerry Seinfeld. These cars had not been approved by regulators and had no Department of Transportation and Environmental Protection Agency approval. The "Gates 959" was stored for 13 years by the Customs Service at the Port of Seattle, until regulations were changed to allow "Autos of Interest" to be imported with severe limitations on their use.[11] Gates and Allen both helped pass the "Show and Display

gonna be a perfect lesson in marginal utility.

I'll be at Barrett Jackson tomorrow afternoon. Hope the 959 is still around.

I'm only going to be there for a couple of hours, but would be nice to be there when this one goes across the block:

What kind of dumb-ass would screw up an 89 930 like that:confused::confused:
And call it improvements. He could have sold the 89 & BOUGHT a 3.6 Turbo for less than be wasted destroying that car..
