What will a 1986 959 Prototype bring at Barrett Jackson?

Says "Reserve" in the listing... when did BJ start accepting reserves???

1986 PORSCHE 959 Lot 5011 | Barrett-Jackson Auction Company

Code V1KOM (EX: BB-PW481) testing car. One of two running prototypes and one of only four survivors. The Porsche 959 is one of the greatest sports cars ever to be assembled and touch the black asphalt which covers the roads on which the 959 is an undisputed champion. The 959 is one of if not the greatest Porsche ever assembled and is just as rare as its title as a world class sports car. In October of 1983, Porsche A.G. announced they will produce 200 Street Version 959s and will sell them to the lucky 200 new owners who are on the Porsche's VIP list. For three years Porsche engineers studied and worked on the 959s prototypes and designs. The street version of the 959 debuted at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show as a 1986 model, these were pre-production model carrying the Porsche 930 Turbo chassis numbers. In 1985, Helmut Bott, head of the 959 development, had taken 29 of 1986 model 930 Turbo chassis from the Porsche factory to turn them into the 959 pre-production prototypes and these were called Code F, N and V. These 29 prototypes were the latest prototypes and they were used for various final tests, media coverage, crush tests and road tests. This car is one of the 7 V-series prototypes and it was used as the chassis, ABS development car which was seen at the famous high speed testing facilities like Nardo, Italy and Minerva, France. Sadly most of the 29 prototype 959s were destroyed and scrapped by the Porsche factory after the 959 project had ended, this particular prototype became one of only four surviving and also one of only two running prototypes in existence still wearing its original pre-production Dunlops with its original prototype light weight wheels. All production 959s were delivered with Bridgestone RE71s with production type wheels. With Porsche factory no-longer releasing any prototype automobiles to the public, this is a very rare chance in owning a prototype Porsche. Not only is it a prototype Porsche, it doesn't get any better than owning the 959 prototype. **BUYER EXPRESSLY ACKNOWLEDGES AND AGREES THAT THIS VEHICLE IS A PROTOTYPE AND IS NOT CERTIFIED TO COMPLY WITH ANY FEDERAL, STATE OR LOCAL LAWS, RULES OR REGULATIONS OR FOR REGISTRATION FOR DRIVING ON PUBLIC ROADS.**

Holy schit, is that thing ugly. It looks like a really bad kit car to me now, like it's built on a Ford Pinto chassis or something.

Feel like stirring up the pot amongst the purists tonight Dennis ?? :D

Those panel gaps do not look right at all and I have no eye for that stuff.

slodave 01-10-2013 09:51 PM

It's a prototype. Those things were beat to hell.

That gap is big between the fender and the wheel or is that just a shadow?

svandamme 01-11-2013 01:02 AM

those tires are old... it's a parts roller

sc_rufctr 01-11-2013 03:20 AM

Wow... On a good day I'm guessing 1.5 to 2 mil.

The rear looks really high in the other photos in the link.

Looks ridden hard, but what a cool piece of Porsche history.

GH85Carrera 01-11-2013 04:16 AM

It looks like a rare-car-collector-garage queen not a driver.

herr_oberst 01-11-2013 06:18 AM

^ This.

It's like one of the GM dream cars from the '50's. The seller is hoping Jerry Seinfeld is feeling flush, or Rick Hendricks is looking to flesh out his Porsche collection.

I still want one of these...

100% correct. Imagine trying to keep this thing road worthy.

I personally wouldn't own a car I couldn't drive but someone will pay a huge sum of money to own this car.

kevin993 01-11-2013 07:20 AM

Anybody know why it survived? How Porsche let it get into private hands? Where it has been?

Reminds me of this one.

I don't know what it'll go for, but BJ should deduct $10K from their fee just for putting this sentence in their description:

"The Porsche 959 is one of the greatest sports cars ever to be assembled and touch the black asphalt which covers the roads on which the 959 is an undisputed champion."

Seriously, that's a winning entry in a bad writing contest.

I think the fact that it's being auctioned at B-J cheapens the car? Maybe not. When I think Scottsdale I think American musclecars, not Porsche. I'd take it to a Monterey auction for the cache of Pebble Beach and the Historics.

Thanks... Imagine what it would cost to get that back on the road.
