Have someone play on it.
Sometimes they are dried out or stored bad and will have cracks in the "sounding wood". Also look if the castframe from the strings is crack free. The strings are pulling with several tons ( normaly around 5-6 ) on the frame. Grüsse Last edited by Roland Kunz; 06-21-2002 at 02:59 AM.. |

Get a PPI from a piano tuner. There's a guild, with a web site, I think, that will list local people who do it.

Wayne, I asked Mrs. Z who is the pianist in our family.
She said: "Avoid the generic no-name brands from China." I asked her what the hell that means. She sez: "Buy a Yamaha." Mmmm....that's what the pricey hunk of wood we have in the living room is, so I guess she put her money where her mouth is.

It is either a Howard or a model M Baldwin. any markings on the Harp?
Here is mine...completely rebuilt it 3 years ago. 1923 Howard. The biggest problems are: - sound board cracked - you will hear a buzzing sound when certain keys are played. -Pins loose and tuner can not tune to correct pitch. When he/she tunes it you will know this. - Felts have become hard. Can all be replaced. Let me know if you need advice on this, I did my complete action with the supervision of a Master Technician. Regards,

Hello
I secound Yamaha is the best for the money. There is much crap from asia out there. Its a bit like in the car market. A Steinway or Bösendorfer are the Mercedes and Porsches while the Yamahs are just Hondas and all the other asian things are Deawoos or other drive 3 years then dump articles. Renewing the hammers is quite simple work ( Ok mostly lots of dust ) also renew the "felts", while you there you can brighten up the keys and do some Tuning to the stringframe ![]() Its not a Porsche but sounds as nice and makes similar fun yet no oilchanges required ( But a tuner )Grüsse |

Here's our Yamaha. I can't even play chop-sticks but my wife plays beautifully.
