Aircooled engine/metallurgy question
Hi Folks, I'm assembling this 73 year old aircooled engine and I'm trying to figure out what sealants to use. Would it be reasonable to use the same sealants that we use on our 911 engines? I'm not sure of the exact make up of the old aluminum alloy; am I over-thinking this whole thing?
Thanks for any advice, good-natured derision, etc. ![]() |

Over thinking. And don't use asbestos gaskets...

If you ever need parts my neighbour is Bob the BMW guy, semi-famous the the local BMW crowd.
He owns an old school house and it's right full of BMW's and vintage bikes.

Thanks guys, I'll treat it as if it's a 911 engine, for which I happen to have the necessary sealants. A barn full of vintage bikes? How intriguing!

For VW engines, I've used Curil T and Locktite [something] as well as Aviation Permatex. For S&G, on my most recent motor, I used both Curil T and Permatex.
