If you have easy hunting grounds and plenty of birds, a double barrel shotgun is nice and really classy. It also can be carried safely and the shells can be extracted cleanly, going back into your west.

BUT - if your hunting grounds are tough and you have to work hard for your birds burning lots of boot leather, and you may only get a few shots a day, a semi auto can't be beat. It has that magic 3rd shot. Getting 2-3 birds out of that first flush of a covey of quail is nice, if you may never see them again after they run up a rock face. Same is true on a dove hunt if you have a large group flying over ...

My quail hunting in the CA high desert has dictated my choice ... ;)

Never done any "real" upland hunting (have gotten a few quail on the way to the squirrel woods), but have shot lots of skeet and trap. Only perfect 25 I shot was with a Mossy 500 in 12ga and a no-choke barrel (28" cut down to 19"). I also traded an AK for a nice 20ga O/U after the 2008 elections.

In short, explore your options, but shoot whatever you are comfortable with.

resident nut here again....................

i have NEVAR purchased a spoon to look at or to fondle. i look at spoons as a tool. i use the hell out of them when i can. i do treat them with respect, i clean the hell out of them, i do accessorize them to be mission compliant.

doing DOD parts all my life ya learn real fast what the hell a MIL-SPEC is. and they aint pretty. the insane testing that happens with any weapon, is beyond all belief before that weapons system no matter what is fielded.

yeah yer saying to yerself WTF is he talking about????? well when ya buy cheap, expect cheap performance and failure.

i dont know about any of you but i value MY TIME more than anything. when people waste my time..............i am PISSED!

and when any weapon fails in the field for what evar reason....................well ya might as well throw rocks or wield a club and go home after driving hours and allotting time off from work etc etc.

after reading the mil specs on the 1st generation HK/BENELLI M-1 i knew i had to have one. has never failed.

samo with the BENELLI M-2. shot every round known and nevar a FTF or FTE.

look what the M-4 BENELLI had to go thru before being fielded. holy sheet that was an eye opener. lets run this over with our 5 ton truck and smoosh it in the mud and then fire it!

samo with my rem 870.

samo with my h&r single shot .410

samo with browning autos.

yeah i love engraved anything, its art for arts sake. but i dearly love performance when conditions are crappy. and dont tell me you have never fallen down in the mud/snow/sand/dirt and yer weapon takes a header into the muck. if ya havent well ya aint really hunting.

look at the latest 2013 SHOT SHOW introduction of the BENELLI's. incredible product. incredible Q.C. and yes you pay for it, no different than a porsche over a chevy vega or ferd pinto purchase.

yeah 28" and 30" barrels are spendy, but when it comes down to lobbing a gazzilion rounds downpipe with out ANY PROBLEMS...............thats when it pays for itself.

i cant think of anything better than going quail or dove hunting with my plugged benellis , with a 55rd bandelero of #6 shot. yeah i may miss on my 1st/ 2nd shot, but 99.9% of the time my 3rd shot WILL CONNECT leading them!

barrel change outs are brain dead simple.

my buddies BENELLI 30" SUPER SPORT CARBON FIBER FULL CHOKED PORTED BARREL is a freeking werk of art! man i DROOL every time he whips that out. and every time i go to bass or cabelas i about POO MYSELF at the COST of one. some day i will own one. and then those damn zombee quail and dove WONT BE LAUGHING!

ya really want it to shoot...................take it to VANG COMP guru of ALL THANGS SHOTGUN!
