Leather Steering wheel cover

Bought a little project. 88 BMW E30 vertible. Needed lots of little repairs. One of the last things I need to do is to find a leather kit for the steering wheel. Anyone here ever done this and if so any recommendations or where to get one that is of quality, not the slip on type.

I've always heard good things about wheelskins. Though you should look at used options on Ebay and bimmerforums, it might be a good time for upgrade. You could also pick up a used Momo and hub at a decent price.

I've used wheelskins multiple times on multiple vehicles. They won't look exactly like the factory cover because they won't be cut to cover the ends of the spokes, but I've always had good luck. They look and feel good. I think it normally takes me an hour or so to put them on.

I know it's possible to buy covers (not wheelskins) for various 911 wheels that are cut to go on exactly like the originals. There may be something similar for bimmers too.

Note that a wheelskin is a cover not a replacement. You need a replacement which usually means having one cut from scratch and stitched on.

I'll look at wheelskins. Being a convertible there isn't much of one to take off to give a full pattern. I do like the idea of making my own.

In that case you might like the wheelskins. I've owned two and the only reason for replacing the first was because the color came off. Easy to install if you get the tension correct from the start and you will if you take your time.

Get appropriate piece of leather (tandy leather ?), punch yer holes, thread it on using waxed dental floss.

Dad's first wife did this when he bought the 356 in '65, still looks great today even sitting in hot sun for years, etc.

I had one years ago and a friend sewed it on with nylon lace and it looked and felt great.
