Cool ScubaDive Mini-Movie - Kona Hawaii

I'll share my first real attempt at a mini-movie for your warm water "wish I was there scuba diving" enjoyment.

Shot this over a week duration scuba diving from the live-aboard dive boat the Kona Aggressor on the west coast of the Big Island of Hawaii.

19 hours of raw GoPro Hero2 video, Then 130-140 HOURS of self-critical-over-anal Sony Vegas editing later, produced a 15 minute mini-movie comprised of 5 chapters of unique dives, about 3 minutes per chapter.

I dedicated it to my Mom who has brain cancer........

Yes the holy rule of "People get bored after 2-3 minutes watching long dull boring videos" has been broke by me the Executive filmer/producer guy...........but I honestly don't feel this is long dull or boring.

Give it 15 minutes of your life, every 3 minutes it really changes tempo.

I think you'll enjoy the music, dive video, and sound effects from Diver Dave Productions.

Feedback is always welcome, especially from fellow divers.

Happy Bubbles.

video work underwater can be quite challenging shooting with filters, lighting, and meanwhile trying to stay alive while getting dog piled into the reef bottom by a 1000 pound 12-13 foot wingspan manta ray during a night dive....ho hum, pretty boring.

Go Full Screen, and enjoy the high def.

VERY NICE!!! Never been diving in that part of the world. Looks wonderful. Thank you, it took the winter chill out of me for the duration.

Damn, Dave....that was absolutely spectacular. I am a diver and also have a GoPro Hero2. I have not gotten my GoPro wet yet, but plan to do so in February. I can tell a lot of work went into that film, and it paid off....not a dull moment. I could have watched at least another 15 minutes of that diving and filming. Well done!

The quality is stunning. Can you tell me how you had your GoPro rigged? Which case did you use? Which straps/mounts did you use?

Great timing for that video...just the cure for winter blues in Kansas City, yearning for my next dive trip!

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks all for your kind words.

While having dove and shot still pictures for almost 10 years, this honestly was my first trip and time out with the GoPro. I only got the camera several days before the week long dive trip..........so, if I can shoot that quality out of the box, so can you.........yeah I did put as I said ~140 hours of video editing into it to make it a slick production, but still, you gotta have the raw footage up front..........it KILLS me to leave "good" footage on the editing room floor, and it was a struggle to keep that mini-movie culled short even at 15 minutes long, but heck, starting with 19 hours of video, that's some serious trimming.

You can see my GoPro rig with tray/lighting in another post on Scubaboard here:

My DIY Hero Tray, Travel Bag, Light Arms

For you fellow divers wanting to learn tips/tricks with a GoPro Camera, do some digging around on that GoPro Forum on Scubaboard, lots of great info on there for filters/lighting/techniques.

Really nice first video!! I've done some diving in kona and think I recognized some of the spots. Did you dive up near Kawaihai Hbr.? Captian Cook's Monument?
That was a friendly/ Territorial Morey.

Thanks for posting

Thanks for the mini-vacation while I sit with two layers of polar fleece. I haven't been in the water for a while.
