$219??!! thinking of driving to Bass Pro this weekend. (probably sold out due to the frenzy)..

anyone shooting this thing? i like the accutrigger. i like the heavier barrel. some Leupold rimfire scope..and look out tiny tasty living things!!

I bought my 8-year old son a Savage Cub single shot .22 for Christmas. Really nice little gun for the money, he's put around 250 rounds through it without a single FTF or FTE. I like the accutrigger, even though it's small I enjoy shooting it. If the bigger ones are as nice as his you can't go wrong.

my friend bought the Cub for himself. he brought it to Tuscon last week and it was giddy good fun. it was a lefty model so awkward for me. i liked the trigger.

I think it's fun but too damn small to shoot. It does have me thinking that daddy needs a .22.

In this age of the black rifle fad, people overlook the sheer function and better accuracy of the bolt action. Vash, I'd say gofer it!

One other benefit, mom doesn't complain as much about ammo and range fees when it's a father/son activity.

Vash - my limited experience with it was not positive. Perhaps isolated, but in my case the last bullet would jam in the magazine. Not every time but pretty often. The Marlin model 60 semi-auto or equivalent bolt Marlin might be something to take a look.

They are good shooters. You will like the trigger. Good throw it in the truck and go shoot stuff gun. But.....why not a .17 HMR.

I have a Mk II BTV (heavy barrel, fancy thumbhole stock, accutrigger) and it is *very* accurate. As in shoot asprins, tums, etc. at 50 yards.

Big complaints are the magazine, and a lower level of QC - check the muzzle crown before buying if possible.

The Remington is actually a Zastava, and is currently imported by k-var

Was just out looking at ammo for the 12ga today and noticed the 17HMR rounds were crazy cheap...can't recall the exact price but was much lower than I would have expected.

I have a Savage bolt action 22. Same action I suspect. Let others have mentioned, the magazine design sucks. The last 1-3 cartridges will angle up too high and miss the chamber. I have smoothed the mag to allow the cartridge to slide easier into chamber and that helped. With soft hollow point I still get miss feeds.

Check the crown for uniformity and no nicks on the rifling that is visible at the crown.

I've been thinking I may get a marlin 60 with the tube magazine.

Correct on the crown. After shooting a good bit, you can look at it and hopefully see a perfect snow flake like pattern on it...

I have quite a few factory mags for my Mk II, and had quite a few for my 93 in 22wmr, never had an issue.

The mag release plate can be adjusted to fix any related issues - its kinda picky on how it is aligned when the retaining screw is put in.

You'll probably end up wanting to upgrade to a Boyds stock at some point - the F stock is kinda flimsy up front, and flexes. Not the best for consistent accuracy. Since Boyds is the OEM for Savage, a replacement is easy, you'll just need new bottom metal and screws.

You can play with torque values on the action screws and see the effect on accuracy. Factory spec is 15 *inch*-pounds, and much like a 356 a pound or two tighter on the back than on the front seems to be ideal. "Good" values have been found from 10 to 20 inch-pounds on various rifles.

I would say if you can swing it get a slightly better one than the one that you may have annoying mag issues with. Honestly the Marlin Model 60 is built so well and works so well I cannot believe it. Keep it clean and lubed and you should be happy.

For a few bucks more you can get the industry standard... Ruger 10/22.
I've got one that is very accurate. There are tons of aftermarket accessories available for it. Never had a FTF or FTE in 32 years and I don't clean it like I should.

i think the 10/22 feels small..i want the big boy feel.

my brother has a 10/22 with a silencer. super fun to shoot, but man..it feels tiny.

I had $400 in a 10/22 build - based on a $100 pawn shop rifle - that I could never get accurate. Even mid grade target ammo (ely black box, etc) would give me 6" groups at 50 yards.

I paid $275 for my Savage Mk II BTV, put a $100 simmons scope on it, and can give some older shooters with Suhl 150s and Remington 40xs a run for their money.
