All of you guys did a lousy job....

of talking me out of a 930 nearly 2 years ago. Wanna see if you can redeem yourselves and talk me out of a 996?
I have to replace my daily driver Jeep. It now has 260k , it stinks on the inside, it is beat to hates and back, and is rusting away. I don't expect it to finish out summer. I was originally shopping for another jeep just to drive back and forth to work in, but I am sort of burnt out on driving SUV''s. and I already have a decent truck for working down at the rentals, and hauling stuff in . Really , the only car that sparks my interest right now is a 996. Can be had for under 20k all day long, and if I shop carefully, I could probably grab one up for around 15. You only live once, and being a car guy, life is to short to drive boring cars. I have driven mostly beaters for the last 10 years, and quite frankly , I want something nice to drive for a change. Not that I really care, but my current ride is somewhat embarrasing.
I've got my lady's permission, although she said it was " ridiculous". Easy for her to say, as she climbs into her m3, or sporty little 328 xi wagon everyday.
I will have to borrow a little bit of money to make this happen, but the monthly payment will be less than the amount I save from quitting smoking almost a year ago, and in no way will affect my finances. Maintenance costs are not really a factor, as this is what I do for a living, and having another Porsche sitting outside the bldg cannot be bad for biz.
Still, once again, I feel guilty for even entertaining the thought. My trigger finger is twitching, think you can talk me down?

996s are a hell of a bargain, IMO, if you buy right. Buy a decent C4S so you can drive it all year round, and it's a lot better looking than a base C2. If it's not going to hurt finances, and your current ride is ready for the scrap heap, why not? So long as you can live with the smaller space, going from a Jeep. But as you say, it's a commuter car. I'm not one for car loans, but that's your own personal decision.

Fred - I understand the economics but for me if you don't love the car - and I mean LOVE THE CAR (you know - in the "looks department") - it just doesn't work.

Surely you could find a nice 3.2 Carrera for the same $ - maybe even a cab.

Or a C4 964 even.

Bottom line you have to test drive and you'll know it one way or another....please keep us posted and good luck!

Baz, I already have an 80 sc, and an early turbo. I am really looking for a car to drive every single day, with my work boots on , or without. One that is easy to drive, with functional AC , heated seats, a nice stereo. One that my lady can drive, that I can road trip to Florida if needed, and something that I am not always underneath, tinkering with, and or worrying about. I am not 100% in love with the looks of the 996, but I am 100% in love with driving them. I now have a few customers with them, and every time I drive one, all I can think is "Must have"

It is only "cheap" until the motor blows. Then you will owe money on a boat anchor. If you cannot afford a GT3 or TT keep driving a Jeep.

How was that?

For me the fried egg headlamps and the slab sided ford probe look kill it. I'd rather drive a Jeep, no kidding.

The gold car is a Toyota "clone". It is not a 996. But it proves a point.

Also consider the fact that the prices on the 996 are far from bottomed out. They will reach 928 territory before they level out.

Pull the trigger. The 996 is a blast and fits all the check points you mentioned.

It is sometimes tough to get this particular group to say yes to this subject but thats only because we all love the air cooled units.

I am currently driving a jeep unlimited but my next " sports " car will be a 996.

Enjoy and show us what you get.

Add an aero kit and the right wheels and I can deal with 996 headlights.
