I have a bud that is F A R from scottish. Plays the pipes, has a convicing accent and drinks fine single malt.

I got a fever, and the only prescription is more bagpipes!

In Devil's Brigade, the scene where the canadian dandies are marching into camp accompanied by pipes, was awesome.

I've played for about 44 years - started learning when I was 8 and still learning.

I'm not Scottish but my wife is a Scotsman's daughter and she loves the pipes as well as Single Malt Whisky.

Have played at weddings and funerals - sound is best when out in the open or in a large vaulted church.

There are some fantastic tunes for occasions - Highland Cathedral is a great one for a large band at a church or hall. Look it up on youtube.

If you think one player is loud, then obviously a band is louder. However for maximum impact, there is nothing that comes close to a massed band for leaving a lasting impression. Final Parade of the massed bands at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo will give you a feel.

In Sydney Australia, we have an annual parade for the War veterans - we call it the Anzac Day Parade. At the end of the Parade, all the bands mass together to march back down the route to the war memorial, as a Scottish Act of Remembrance.

To be part of 300+ pipers and about 200 drummers in a single band is both a thrill and an honour. if you jump to about 30 second mark, you can hear how loud we are even when still in the distance.

I grew up listening and going to plenty military bagpipe and drum concerts. If played well, the combination of drums and pipes will make you grab your sword and run at the enemy. It gets your blood boiling!

One of my nephews plays (he's a MacKay). Jake (Notfarnow) knows him.

I love the pipes, although my heritage is Northern UK. A full pipe band is almost like a force of nature.

(Although some say the definition of "perfect Pitch" is throwing a banjo and hitting a piper!)

I think that pipes can be truly amazing as well and I think that they really hit the gut when done right because of the tonals hitting your ear - The complex cord structure combined with a cadence that is nothing short of the heart beat of a thousand enraged men, its no wonder they were used to boil blood prior to battle or send a mass into tears at a funeral...

This was actualy a big hit on the radio when I was growing up... I went out and bought the record.

There was a reason they were used in battle....scares the beejeezus outta the other side.

When I was in college there was a guy who would occasionally practice in the woods behind the house I was living in. He was terrible--several of the guys in the house discussed offing him. :eek:

Personally I like bagpipes--when played well.

The case I keep my pipes in when transporting them has a label printed on the side which says "Scottish Assault Weapon" in big military style stencil letters.

Gets some strange looks when I take them on public transport.

Rumor has it that Bagpipes are still classed as an instrument of war in some countries - though I've never been able to confirm it.

BTW, my Momz (shut up, Sid) is quite the seamstress....she made a custom bag for a buddy of mine whose is a descendant from an obscure clan.

I love bagpipes, there is "A College of Piping" right here where I live in Summerside, PEI. They come from all over the world to our summer festivals, and it is grand fun with pipes going all hours for days on end.

My neice at one time, had a rock band and they did a number (she played the pipes on it) where the pipes were very promenent and it rocked! Can't quite recall the name of the song, it was "Maureen" or "Colleen" something like that .

She also played the pipes in the subway in Toronto, and made bags of money. She said most people were paying her to stop. In waring times they would've been fierce weapon I am sure.

It's played by "Rawlins Cross" out of Cape Breton, NS Song's called "Colleen" Hear it on you tube. Or Not.
