Bagpipes in a field...

Its just needs its own thread! I took this today on my way to lunch. He was enjoying himself...(sounded like a bunch of cats being raped)

That is a good place to practice. He is outstanding in his field!

Personally I wish they would outlaw bagpipes. There is nothing pleasant about them except when they stop. Much like pounding your head against the wall, it feels good when you stop.

I would rather hear Rosanne Barr sing the National Anthem.

Why did you have to remind me of that.

In the right context, I think they can be cool. A buddy in college in our dorm played. He normally practiced on his recorder and worked his way through college playing at bars and weddings and even took a semester off and played for Disney World.

He cranked the full kit up IN the dorms once. Holy crap those things are LOUD!!

The problem with bagpipes is that they are a difficult instrument to learn, and extremely difficult to tune. (I played for about 12 years.) The result is that 90% (or more) of the pipers you come across sound absolutely horrible.

But when it's done right, it's amazing! (Slight bias here.)

Not as strange as the Darth Vader on a unicycle playing bagpipes video on Youtube...

...but strange nonetheless.

Why do bagpipe players walk as they play?
........They are just trying to get away from the noise!

I went to a jazz concert once. The act was late coming on stage. So we're all sitting there in the audience waiting for something to happen and beginning to talk amongst ourselves when just ever so slightly you heard what you thought were bagpipes. Sure enough the piper comes marching down the center aisle at full megabels or whatever. He was playing one of those mournful Scottish piping dirges.

He goes on stage and faces the audience while the drummer behind him mounted his throne and added some very, very rudimentary percussion. Of course, the guitars came out and joined in, the piano player came out, acoustic bass...

I never, ever thought bagpipes could ever have ANY application to jazz music whatsoever when I went in.

Coming out, my tune was changed.

Bagpipes can sound amazing. I work on a military installation, and the cemetary here plays a tune everyday at noon (due to proximity, the only time I hear it is when I'm on the golf course). It gets me every single time. I love it.

For some reason I find the sound of bag pipes making their noise as they deflate (when the guy finally stops) really funny.

Played well, yes, I think they sound pretty good. Wouldnt want to hear them with a hangover.

Case in point, you should never hear that noise. Most pipers suck, and make a bad name for the instrument.
