Hello Slodave, question on USB

Hi Dave, I have several USB hubs that I never touched for years. I thought I never need it until now, just bought some other devices and I thought that it's nice at I don't have to stand up to switch cable everytime I need anything. So I hook up the USB hub. The comp didn't see any device I hook to the hub. Switched to another hub, same thing. Switch to another one, another one hooked in, I can the HD. I can get on it but for only several seconds, it disappeared.

Is this because the hub is being older version? Does version matter? I know the comp has USB version 2.0 I just want to confirm with you before I buy another hub, hate to have to make multiple trips to Frys.

Are these powered USB hubs? And what type of external HD? Small pocket type or large desktop type?

Most USB hubs need to be powered by an external plug to the wall.

More details please.

the hub is the tiny looking one without pluging into the outlet like this: FRYS.com*|*GEAR HEAD

The HD is the ext HD, not the pocket one. I also tried Ext DVD, and printer.

Are you saying all those hub without electrical plug is not good enough, even for home use?

The one in the link comes with an AC adapter.

Non powered USB hubs are good for mice and other devices that only need a little power.

I hate this. Slowly, I have too many things hanging around my desk. After several years, clean up things that I thought I don't need. Slowly, they stack up, and hanging everywhere again.
