At most public schools the inmates are now running the asylum, and the parents are the biggest part of the problem.

I think you may be brushing that paint with a pretty broad stroke. Catholic school doesn't give you a automatic ticket to well behaved kids or reasonably self sufficient adults by default.

I think if you dropped a "most" in front of " Teachers are still in charge, " this may be a little more agreeable.

Ive have tried private school and public with Bryce. Both have positives and negatives. To characterize " Most public schools as being run by the inmates " I believe is simply not a fact. An opinion based on your area at best maybe.

There are approximately 98,000 k-12 public schools in the US.

Fast Facts

The are approximately 33,000 k-12 private schools in the US.

What might make sense is that public schools turn out idiot kids at a rate of 3-1.

Now that I am buying.

Oh, back to the subject.

Matt, I dont know why but that one just got me sideways for a second.

Oh, back to the subject.

That girl has never had someone say no to her in her life.

I havent enjoyed a you tube clip that much in ages. I was hoping the judge called her back one more time.

Go Judge!

Not being a Roman Catholic, knowing that they have had some problems with their priests, I still cannot fathom why people such as yourself can only ever bring that point up.

Are you really going to denigrate the works of people such as Mother Theresa, or the millions upon millions of people for whom Roman Catholicism brings great comfort, support and care?

Are you really going to say that, in the balance of all the many good things that are done by that organization that the only comment you can come up with is the actions of the few horrible people who defile their organization with their pedophilia?

Maybe this is why young people are so disrespectful, it is because too many of us lead them by horrible example....such as yourself.

Chris, the comments are definitely generalized. I don't doubt that there are many quality public schools in the USA, we made our decision because we felt that the combination of moral and academic standards were the best fit with our goals. Our local and state data support that decision academically, and we enjoy the focus on manners, respect, etc. We have a very good friend who is the principal of a large local high school, as well as several teachers in my wife's immediate family. They all lament the gradual erosion of power away from the teachers and administrators due to parents that would rather blame teachers than their kids, as well as the constant threat of litigation.

I'm a product of public schools (maybe not a vote in their favor;)), as is my wife. Hell, I didn't even grow up a Catholic. We made the best decision for our situation, as I'm sure you did for yours.

Todays kids have one thing on their mind and thats the root of the disrespect. That is they think of their wants first and no one or nothing is more important than satisfying that desire. I did say wants not needs.....

Thousands of little boys and hundreds of girls and women are raped by priests and the church is most interested in covering up the deeds and moving the rapist priest to a new church to protect the rapists. That negates a lot of the good thing the church did. The church is STILL protecting the rapists priests.

While I find all of those actions equally disgusting Glen, I think you are blowing it out of proportion as well.

Because...........

They have no respect for themselves! Without that, there can be no respect for anything or anyone else.

I'm in the middle of this book now, amazing what "The Greatest Generation" did with blood sweat and tears, as well as respect and truly helping society out...

We were taught to respect our elders, now we are taught to disrespect our elders through TV, internet and by many of our outstanding parents. When ever our kids get to the point of being a little disrespectful, both my wife and I will let them have it right there and then. It must be nipped in the butt right there.

Poor parenting because over half of all marriages end in divorce and there is no father figure?

Cajundaddy 02-05-2013 08:34 PM

Kids are as respectful as their parents raised them to be. No more... no less. Public school, private school, TV, or no TV. Training always takes place. Either you train them or they train you.

Wasn't this case in FL? Does 30 days for contempt really mean 30 days there? It doesn't in CA because of overcrowding.

I was at my college jazz class and observed disrespect there, too.

During class while the instructor was speaking, students were having conversations and not paying attention. It's very distracting.

This also happens during the rehearsal of the music when students are not playing. ( at rest )

Really take away from the purpose of the class.

The instructor also teaches high school. He says he has problems with students texting in class instead of paying attention.

I would toss students out, myself.

If you ever go to a faculty meeting in a high school, its even worst. The teachers are much worst then their students. A serious lack of respect for the speakers. Oh yeah, they talk on the phone, and even file their finger nails.

Respect starts at home. Plain and simple.

+1...NO kids here, but I've seen a lot. IMO, school, TV, etc. are more secondary influences. "That" train has left the station, well before they get to that point...

It's been so long since I've posted, but this is a compelling subject.

Years ago I overheard my daughter kindly reasoning with her son: "What kind of mother would I be if I allowed you behave like that?" I always smile when I think of it. I'm proud of my kids.

svandamme 02-06-2013 12:24 AM

lol, that sure wiped the smile and giggles off her face...

Bingo.
For everything you try and teach your kids there is at least a hundred voices telling them something different but not giving up is the key IMO.
