Appreciate your knowledge on the BMW M Coupe.

Hello.
I've been curious about the BMW M HARD TOP Coupe.
What are your opinions and knowledge about this machine?
Thank You.

They've made them for several years and a couple generations, so be specific

There are a couple owners here as well

BeyGon owns a 2001 Z3 Coupe which is similar

Well, you seem to be the 'Champ', can you offer me some education?
I'd honestly appreciate it.

They were built for 4 years, IIRC. (We're talking the Z3 version.) Maybe 1998-2001? The first 2 years were with the 240 HP motor that the (E36/2nd gen) M3 got. The latter 2 years were with the "European" head that bumped up HP to something like 331. Obviously the latter 2 years are considered more collectable. But IIRC the suspension might have been taken from the older 3-series, so it got knocks for that. I don't think you can trust Kelly Blue Book/NADA values, as they seem to undervalue the cars (at least that was my observation when I briefly considered one of these cars about 8 years ago).

Somehow I like the Z3-based styling of the Clown Shoe, but really detest the Z4-styled ones.

i had a 99 z3 m coupe with most all dinan mods including supercharged. i also installed a euro six speed gearbox. i did not care for the roadsters but really like the "shoe" and especially the M model. seating is very tight and has very little rear adjustment due to the rear compartment. and, the steering wheel is not adjustable. the cars are relatively heavy...about 3100 pounds i believe. the radiator side tanks are plastic and can fail overtime as well as the plastic water pump impellers. some cars have had spot welds in the rear compartment break in and around the area of the single mounted rear differential. i installed a rear reinforcement kit in mine but saw no signs of welds being cracked or beoken. this kits included a second ear for the differential. i really enjoyed the car but sold it after three years. if it had been laguna seca blue i would probably still own it!

The second gen, Z4-based M-coupes (E86) were offered from '06-'08. They still offered the S54 engine that was introduced for the E46 M3 and fitted to the Z3-based M's (E36/8) near the end of the production run ('01 MY and possible briefly '02). IIRC, the hp was slightly lower in the E36/8 (315hp) due to differences in the exhaust over the E46 M3 and the E86 M-Coupe (333hp).

The E85/86 M-roadsters and coupes didn't seem to sell as well as their earlier counterparts. IMO, they have more of a sleeper look and subdude interior. However, for a tall guy like myself, they were much more inviting. Also, the E86 coupes had more of a fast-back look versus the shooting brake style of the earlier cars.

Last fall I sold an '06 M-roadster... always preferred the styling of the coupe to the roadster but the roadster was a winner for my wife and I due to our geographical location and climate . I have little to complain about the car other than it being somewhat difficult to live with as a daily driver mainly due to size and some extent stiffness. Fuel economy wasn't great but that's not why you buy one of these. It was a blast to thrash around corners. Didn't really get too many tire kickers wanting to talk about it but that is probably due to its similarity to the regular Z4. Apart from hood chines, quad exhaust and big wheels, it was quiet.

Hope this helps some on the newer cars. Coupes are certainly more rare that the roadsters but they are out there and really are quite reasonably priced I think. Look hard and you maybe just maybe can find one still covered under a CPO warranty. My '06 just expired this past November.

Buddy of mine surprised me a while back when he bought a Z4 coupe. Not sure what year it is.
I went over to his house and he let me try it on for size. I didn't fit very well, but it was perfect for him as he's smaller.
Haven't had a ride in it so don't know how it goes, but I'm sure it goes pretty good.
