A 10-ton meteor streaked at supersonic speed over Russia's Ural Mountains on Friday, setting off blasts that injured nearly 1,000 people and frightened countless more.

A Russian health official says nearly 1,000 people have sought help for injuries after a meteor streaked through the sky and exploded Friday over Russia's Ural Mountains with the power of an atomic bomb.

The sonic blast from the hurtling space rock shattered countless windows and deeply frightened thousands, with some elderly women declaring the world was coming to an end.

The meteor -- estimated to be about 10 tons -- entered the Earth's atmosphere at a hypersonic speed of at least 33,000 mph and shattered about 18-32 miles above the ground, the Russian Academy of Sciences said in a statement. It released the energy of several kilotons above the Chelyabinsk region, the academy said.

Chelyabinsk health chief Marina Moskvicheva, said Friday that 985 people in her city had asked for medical assistance. The Interfax news agency quoted her as saying 43 were hospitalized.

Amateur video broadcast on Russian television showed an object speeding across the sky about 9:20 a.m. local time, just after sunrise, leaving a thick white contrail and an intense flash.

"There was panic. People had no idea what was happening. Everyone was going around to people's houses to check if they were OK," said Sergey Hametov, a resident of Chelyabinsk, a city of 1 million about 930 miles east of Moscow.

"We saw a big burst of light, then went outside to see what it was and we heard a really loud thundering sound," he told The Associated Press by telephone.

The explosions broke more than 1 million square feet of glass, city officials said.

It was not immediately clear if any people were struck by space fragments.

This meteor was the size of a house. Tunguska was the size of an apartment building (if you don't believe it was caused by Tesla.) Both hit Russia.

Imagine having a glass shop in Chelyabinsk. You would be sitting in high cotton for weeks.

Probably has something to do with land mass size.

The whole earth is pelted by space junk daily. Just look up at the sky at night and you will usually see one or two falling stars. Around Christmas, I counted 3 in the 15 minutes I was outside one evening. I would say it's just bad luck that Russia now has on record two relatively large strikes within 100 years.

at 33,000 mph anything the size above a few yards has got some energy. Anyone want to crack open your physics book and determine what the energy produced of an object weighing 10 tons and traveling 33,000mph produces.

For one thing Russia is HUGE
For another thing, it's close to the North Pole, so it's always pointing in the same direction , relatively speaking. and Object that's coming in , will have better chance of hitting Russia cause Russia will always be in the same spot for longer.

If something were to strike near the equator, then it would be a lottery ticket who would be hit, depending on the earths rotation..

This so fascinating! I'm glad nobody was killed, but its just so amazing to see something like this and the energy involved. It happened about 240 miles from my wife's hometown. She's on Skype now with relatives there talking about it.

I don't think anyone found the one that made that mile wide crater in New Mexico.
maybe this went deep in the mud, cooled by the frozen lake, it will be interesting to see.

Its a little known fact that vodka has magnetic properties that interact with dark elixer found in atmosphere causing disturbances in the flux waves that stream past the earth.
