Volkswagen XL1

Do they *have* to cover the back wheels? Ugh.

No, its not a concept car or some elaborate sci-fi movie set prop, this is Volkswagen's most radical car they've ever put into production, the XL1 plug-in hybrid. The unique body isn't just for looks, the aerodynamic shell and low center of gravity optimizes performance and fuel efficiency. Inside, the car is powered by a two-cylinder TDI diesel and a lithium-ion powered electric motor that can cover a range of up to 30 miles without sipping one ounce of fuel. Now, its not the speediest car on the road with a 0-62 time of 12.7 seconds (100 mph top speed), though you can bet it will turn more than a few heads when it finally hits showrooms sometime this year. VW

Cover all 4 wheels, please. They're hideous.

It looks different. On the roads of today, that alone is a step in the right direction.

The other day I spent 3 minutes admiring a Citroen Ami 8 Break - Google it and you'll see why that is quite an act - just because it wasn't like every other car on the street.

GL backing that thing up.

Otherwise looks cool. This will be very hip in CA, I am sure. A Prius is a common commuter now and not a way to make a statement any more.

I'll buy it if it charges on a wall socket (110/220).

I'm surprised no one mentioned the coolest stats:

Official euro rating 261 mpg

All carbon fiber construction, weighs only 1,795 lbs

47hp 800cc diesel twin
27hp electric motor
Both feed into a twin-clutch DSG

Slippery shape (cd 0.189) and low friction means in takes only 8.3 hp to cruise at 62 mph

They are TEENIE two seaters, significantly smaller than a Miata

They will not be for sale, only lease, and only 50 will be built

Man, great stats. But lame on the 50 models and lease only. How do I get a reservation? VW dealer?

Does it have the same HPFP they put in the other TDI?

You forgot to mention the price... $100,000!!! No thanks!!

And I had a Honda Insight I used as a beater/work car. Was a wonderful little car. I could get 90 US MPG with it. All aluminum. 1,850 lbs.

Well, I'm not impressed. That styling is very derivative, IMO.

I would sacrifice an MPG or two and drive that car without the skirts. My wife already has a 97 Cabrio, and my daughter drives an 03 Jetta.
