When does 3lb = 8lb?

When you weigh a bag of spuds at Walmart...

went shopping tonight with my Son, told him to grab a bag of spuds. He asked 5lb, 8lb or 10lb? Then he proceeded to weigh them to see if the package was accurate. I'm pretty anal when it comes to many things but I never would have thought about doing that - well he found out that the bags were off and not by a little either! Some by 2lb while others off by 5lb! Wow

BTW - he varified it against a mechnical scale as well that was located by the greens

well, that explains why these two ladies think they are a mere 125lb.

Don't know if you want to take it this far, but that is a significant difference between advertised weight and actual weight--much beyond slight variations due to automated packaging. In your particular case, you are getting less than half of what you are paying for or, to put in another way, you are paying more than double the advertised price for the amount of potatoes you expected.

This is something that ought to be taken up with Walmart management, if for no other reason than to inform them of the shortages. It would be interesting to know how many bags are short or if any are over. If nothing else, I'd bet a T.V. consumer advocate would love to hear about this.

Post this to various social media sites - it might go viral. Remember the subway footlong with the tape measure next to it from a few weeks ago?

11 vs 12 inches seems pretty minor, but that went huge. NPR even covered that story, which just seemed silly to me. I mean, that's an easy processing error, or someone scrunched the sandwich a little bit. But 3lbs vs 8lbs is significant. That's not a minor processing error, that's a huge discrepancy.

Are you talking about the photos of the spuds or those tubs of goo on the scooters?

I just went to WM to buy oil and checked out a 5 lbs. bag of spuds on the scale. It read 6 lbs. I wonder if it's bar coded to charge a flat price or does it get weighed at payout and then charge for 6 lbs?

Moisture evaporation and/or the potatoes were drying out?

Although that would be over 1/2 gallon, but maybe?

Appeared as if the bags were off. Brought it to the Produce Managers attention. He was super apologetic. Checked yesterday and looks like they went back and fixed it - all bag-o-spuds were correct according to digital and mechanical scales.

Does make you wonder though…a pint is a pound the world around?
