Daytona: explain debris caution flags......

They seem to come in very timely fashion... or am I naive...

I am a rookie watcher.

Thanks.

Hmmm.. You caught that eh? LOL
its nascar's way of bunching up the field and keeping the show, ahem, exciting.

Did you happen to see several cars hitting a silver, metal looking object that was on the track,..........that was debris from another car that fell off after an earlier accident. A caution was thrown to let the safety workers remove it from the track before it was flung into the crowd like on Saturday.

That's one of the controversies. Sometime you see nothing on TV so it looks suspicious. Sometimes it sits out there for many laps and the drivers call it in hoping to get a caution when they need one/tired/running out of tires. Smetimes drivers chuck a water bottle out to create a caution. The one today was a definite debris caution.

That's what I thought. Much like a TV timeout in other sports.

I am sure these drivers have an unbelievable skill set but..... I do not get it. Seems like left left left left... pit stop....left left left left... pit stop....left left left left... pit stop....left left left left... pit stop.... crash.....left left left left... pit stop....left left left left... pit stop....left left left left... pit stop....left left left left... pit stop....left left left left........

pavulon 02-24-2013 04:33 PM

they have to turn a little right after stopping in their pit...so...there's that.

I've come to the conclusion that the "debris" is often rubber marbles on the track that are making passing difficult. They clean it up to make the race more exciting.

Why does it take three caution laps to remove a piece of debris?

pavulon 02-24-2013 04:50 PM

takes that long for folks to 'cypher the fella on the radio?

KFC911 02-24-2013 04:52 PM

Today's was legit, sometimes it's total bs imo....

The standard caution is 3 laps. It has something to do with the pits being open. 1 lap lead lap cars, 2nd lap lap down cars. Then bunch up the field and go racing!

The problem is, they have many full course cautions at the road courses and follow the same protocol. That's a LONG TIME.

Yup.

At times it seems sketchy, but at nearly 200 mph a flat tire can cause a situation like they had in the Nationwide race so NASCAR shouldn't take any chances.

sammyg2 02-25-2013 05:50 AM

color me skeptical.

+1. In the 80's and early 90's, a few drivers were accused of carrying objects in the car and "tossing" them out if they were getting too far behind and needed to catch up.

Bunching up the nationwide race to keep it, um, 'exciting', is what caused a massive wreck and lots and lots of future lawsuits.

I watched the last few laps of the 500, they could have thrown the yellow on the last lap but chose not to. As much as they would have liked another Green-White-Checker finish, they probably wanted to keep their star driver safe and not get her caught up in a melee that would blacken their eye a little more.

Just my thoughts while I watched the ending of the race.

Lotta beer being sold in the stands... gotta take pee breaks... someone think of the fans!

VaSteve 02-25-2013 07:19 AM

Cup race was way more exciting without a GWC. Excitement was also fueled by "are they going to throw the caution...?". GWC on Saturday was the result of a wreck already. Ending a race under caution sucks. The plate tracks, cars are in a bunch anyway....other tracks GWC is more relevant to bunching the field.
