Black bear cub at my shop today!!
Freakin' baby black bear cub standing right by my shop door. I knew they were around here, my one buddy Bob says that he sees them in his garbage cans all the time, and he lives right over the hill from me. It is a little more wooded where he lives, but this was my first sighting in my 44 years in this part of Pa.
A customer was leaving , and as he got to my front door, he whispers loudly, " Quick , Fred check this out" Little bugger was standing right in my parking lot. He took off quick when we came out . Wonder where mama is?

That's cool, Fred. I love bears - especially the little ones. Not so much the angry female mom's as Rika pointed out.
Today as I was rounding a turn on North Atlantic Ave. - which runs parallel to the ocean - saw a little baby Gopher tortoise who had just finished crossing the road (east to west) and in front of him about 10 feet was Momma Gopher. They were headed up into a dune. This section of the road contains a park right next to the dunes and there's a lot of natural areas left and Gopher Tortoises cross the road all the time. Makes me a bit nervous because of all the dimwit drivers who never consider there is wildlife in the area. Anyway thanks for sharing! ![]()

We stayed at a place on the outskirt of Tahoe a few years back when my kids were little. We were on our way back to the room after a few games of post dinner ping pong and a dip in the heated pool. The women said, you might want to take a flashlight because the bears are on campus. I am thinking what are the chances that we see one? As we were walking back, it jumped off an 8' edge where they house the trash bins. The landing was dead silence with the exception of its nails. CLICK. It looked at us, and my kids had their dim flashlights (of course they left it on all day) shinning at this thing with two reflective eyes looking at us. This was the first time I was really scared, not of the bear, but it can attack my kids. The little one was 1 1/2 and the older boy was 3 1/2. I shouted from the top of my lung with arms waving making my fat ass look bigger ( I am not a big guy). He takes off the the back of the building, stopped and turned around to look at us. Again, all I see are the pair of reflective eyes. I was thinking, oh f'k. Three more steps and we were shielded by the wall and ran up stairs ASAP hoping the big fat bear did not follow us. He would have ripped us apart. Of course wife laughed at us and called us liars.

I used to love seeing bears doing their thing in Yosemite.

Bears are cool, at a distance with a protective barrier between me and them.

Reminds me of the old joke...Two friends were about to take a hike in the woods. One guy was putting on sneakers & his friend asked, "Why are you putting on sneakers?" He answered, "In case we run into a bear." The friend replies, "You can't outrun a bear!" He responds, "I don't need to outrun the bear. I just need to outrun you."

I've had a few encounters with bears in the mountains over the years. Two were coming upon them at close range (like 1-0 - 15 ft.) when we both didn't realize the other was there. You'd think a bear could perceive an approaching person, but I guess they either don't always or wait thinking you will change course. They took off running in both instances. Once when hiking back from a lake in the Sierras, I heard a small noise and looked up in a tree to see two really cute cubs. As a reaction I stopped and looked thinking how cute they were. The next immediate thought was where the mother was. I just casually turned and continued on down the trail not looking back & never saw her.

I had a black bear in my garage then in my kitchen last night. Now half is in the freezer and the rest in still in the garage. The remaining half in the garage will catch up with parts in the freezer tonight. Later this summer and into next winter, I expect to find a black bear in some stew. A friend retreived him from the woods last weekend. He was nice enough to give me the front quarters. I think he just got tired of processing meat. I am very appreciative either way.
