Please learn me on 5 vs 3 bar, my paint and body guy just left and advised me buy a new deck grille, mine would cost more to repair I agree.

From 68 1/2 to 69, Porsche used a new decklid and grill. They are commonly known as "3 bar," based on the grill. Like yours probably is, 3 bar grills get horribly deformed, though I've never understood why someone would actively press on the grill to close the decklid. To help strengthen the midway points between the center and outer bars, Porsche added two more making them 5 bar grills, and of course 4 more "hoops" or grill attachment points on the decklid opening.
3 bar aluminum decklids could exist but I've never seen one. My S came with a steel, 3-bar lid, same as my old 69E. ![]() ![]()

I'm guessing you paid around $2K for that one, pilot73 had one for sale recently in that range. If you can, keep it, it will do better than the stock market. 5 years from now it will probably be worth double.
If the one you got is being shipped to you, I'd make sure it's double or even triple boxed. I've shipped a lot of decklids and FedExUPS must have some sort of scanner that tells them to take the box and jam at least one corner down in the ground as hard as possible, dog-earing the lid. Double boxing with a several inch outer insulation buffer seems to work.

I just received some great advise from another Porsche nut. Put the Aluminum Deck lid on the car and hang the steel one in the office. Should I paint the one for the office or leave it ragged w the dented grill?

Good to hear on it being picked up. The steel 5 bar lid is of no consequence, I'd sell it or toss it. The Al lid is nice but I'd find a correct 3 bar set up, a 69 is a unique car, though a decklid is an easy swap at any time at least. It's the dash you have to worry about.

I second what Shaun is advising and I'd go one further. If you aren't going the original 69 route and like the hot rod aspect of the aluminum lid then I'd suggest buying one of the current repops. They are very good and run around 1.2 to 1.5k instead of the 2.4k you've spent and the repop will need less work. There are quite a few people who would be interested in the factory lid for an original 2.2S
