Proud daddy bragging, no negative nancies allowed

My 14 y/o son won his school's geography bee today.
it's a private blue-ribbon school with accelerated curriculum so that's a big deal, at least to his parents
He finished second in the spelling bee because he misunderstood the word so this has to help make up for that.

If he aces the qualifying test he'll get a chance to compete with the top 100 students in the state for a chance to go to nationals in Washington DC (hosted by Alex Trebek).
Not an easy task but he's really good at taking tests so he has a shot at making it to the state level.

Plus this weekend he's playing on the city of Orange all star soccer team in the Calsouth District 3 Tournament.

Excellent.

There is no better glow in the world than the reflected light of your children's achievements.

Well done.

BTW if anyone out there is a geography buff there's a test quiz you can take, 10 different questions per day that are taken from the geography bee. I got 6 out of 10 right

GeoBee Challenge Game, Geographic Bee Practice, Geography Trivia -- National Geographic

That's awesome Sammy!

I went on to the state finals in Louisiana only to be knocked out after a couple of rounds. I found what helped me throughout the years was just by looking at maps and being able to memorize places.

I find that with the advent of things like Google Earth and Maps that kids these days have HUGE advantages. I have a real soft spot in my heart for geography, and if it actually paid the bills I probably look into pursuing it more.

Wow, sounds like your son is well rounded and gifted. That is a wonderful addition to a college admittance resume. I wish my 14 y/o son would apply himself more in school like he does on the football field.

Big congrats on keeping him interested and motivated at 14 years old. There are so many competing interests at that age... I always find it remarkable when kids keep their focus and their "eyes on the prize". There must be some good influences in his life; you should be very proud.

agree 100%. All summer we tried getting my daughter (3 1/2 yrs) to put her head under the water at the cottage. Not a chance... too GARY and she might BROWN.

Two nights ago at swimming lessons, she pops her head under, pops up at looks at me beaming. Couldn't even hide the fact that I was crying. So amazing to watch her take on the world

I bet sammy teared up. C'mon, admit it.

It's o'ficcial, he did well on the qualification test and has been selected as one of the top 100 his age in California going the state competition on April 5th.
He's very competitive (doan know where he gets that), but now I'm reminding him that even if he doesn't win state just getting there and doing his best is a really big deal.
I really don't care if he doesn't win I just want it to be a good experience for him.
If you knew him it'd be easy to forget he's just a kid deep down.
