Interesting. And I wonder which country whines the most about their 'high' price of gas?

The country that relies MOST on the automobile for their daily commute.

Though, in all fairness, my commute now is 4 miles (about 6 minutes, if I hit the lights). My commute in Qatar was about an hour each way. My commute when I worked in Phoenix and Boston...forget about it!

I dunno, I've been in a lot of commuter traffic jams in a number of those countries paying a whole lot more for gas & earning a whole lot less . . .

Really? My experience has been that most places have a far superior public tranportation model than we do (at least where I live...there is NONE!), and things are typically closer together which makes biking/walking a true alternative to driving every day.

Anyway, that $3.29 is a national average? Tucson, AZ is supposedly one of the lower rates in the country and it's hovering around $3.40 right now... my buddy in Cali. posted a pump price of 4.99 last week.

No question. But the roads are still clogged with commuters.

So, based on that...would you postulate that the ones who DO drive are the ones who have no problem affording the high petro rates? Whereas in the U.S. (with the exception of some of the bigger cities), you pretty much MUST drive?

You could postulate that they are the ones that can either afford it or can somehow justify the extra cost. For example, my wife can use a walk/bus/subway/subway/bus method to get to work. Or she can drive in 45 minutes of busy commuter traffic. She drives . . . We can both afford it & justify it.

6 cents per gallon is pretty painful for low income (I think around 8-9 thousand/ year).

Some Americans complain loudly about "high" gas prices because, 1, they are used to lower prices, and, 2, they use a hell a lotta gas, between driving a lot and gas-sucking cars. Where in the world (other than an oil-producing country) would a person in the lower income bracket choose to buy a half ton V8 pickup truck to drive solo and unloaded on a daily basis? Here.

The wholesale spot price in Phoenix for unleaded regular is $3.25 today, the wholesale spot price in Los Angeles for ULR is $3.07

That my friends, is what happens when California taxes are too high and some greedy station owners hold prices as high as possible as long as posssible after a price spike.
With a base of $3.07, and taxes of around 90 cents/gallon (exise and sales), and some dealers marking it up a dollar a gallon, you get $5 a gallon at the pumps.

I paid $4.16 yesterday, so if he's actually paying near $5 a gallon he needs to drive a little farther to an arco station.

BTW, in Booze-mon Montana the wholesale price is $2.66
That's what happens when you make more than you can sell.

I'm in Findlay, Ohio.....home of Marathon oil world headquarters, and where the price of $3.89 a gallon is higher than anywhere within a 50 mile circle.......go figure. BTW, they announce record profits every quarter like clockwork. 4th quarter revenue was up 11% to $4.24 BILLION dollars.

Their "record" profits were:
Profit Margin (ttm): 10.06%

Apple's profit margin for the same period was:
Profit Margin (ttm): 25.35%

The difference? People didn't line up to buy marathon's latest product.
