Swiss Army Knives Fly Again

Looks like I'll be able to pack a Swiss Army knife in my carry-on again. TSA rules will soon permit traditional small pocketknives in addition to other stuff. No: fixed blades, blade wider than 1/2" or longer than 6 cm, locking blade, molded grip. So no Buck, Spyderco, etc. Not sure how Leathermans and similar are treated. Anyway, should be helpful for Victorinox / Wenger sales.

Why does TSA mix their units like this? 1/2 inch wide by 6cm long??? Does anyone there proofread anything anymore?

6cm = 2.362 inches, a bit under 2-3/8"

Why 2 different measurements?
Plus doesn't the US public still use standard measurement?

You're really going to trust those power-mad welfare rejects with your property?

....until the TSA drones see a particularly nice one and decide it must be confiscated for "looking suspicious."

I've carried a credit card sized (2 3/4" x 1 3/4") flat one piece, call it a multi-tool whatever in the wallet without any issues. Its been looked at but never a problem. One edge has been ground to blade edge sharp. Its not a knife, just a handy metal tool that has a cutout for hex head, one corner as a flat screwdriver, one side a rule... no big deal. Also, I could care less if it was ever confiscated as the cost is the price of cup of coffee.... and not meaning Starbucks.

"These are real threats to passengers and flight attendants in the passenger cabin," said a flight attendants' union rep.

I'm just happy to see that I can carry my wiffleball bat onboard now.

I feel so threatened when the airlines hand out these knives. I never know what the crazy next to me might do!

Back in the '70s, I brought my folding Buck knife (mod.102 ??) when I was flying to europe. A flight attendant asked if she could keep it until we got off the plane, which I was certainly agreeable to. Thinking back, I don't see a reason for taking it, except that they were sort of fashionable at the time. I don't see any reason for any kind of knife on an airplane, actually. It's another stupid government thing of changing the rules just when everyone was used to the ones already in effect. The blind mindlessness of those kinds of things is always amazing.

A Swiss Army knife is a handy thing to have when you travel, and I never check luggage, so this change (not effective yet) is useful.

That was me mixing units, not TSA. 2.36" length.

Swiss Army Knives Fly Again

They said this would speed things up in not having to look for small knives anymore but won't they have to ensure that nothing gets on board that just exceeds the new measurements. I like to carry a pocket knife but I can also say that one of these little buggers in the right hands with real commitment can still do a lot of damage to a flight attendant.

Oh well.

Notice they did not put an end to their mandatory child molestation. I imagine they would lose too many employees if they did.

This allows knife manufacturers to come up with a whole new line of "TSA legal" knives.

Stupid, why spend the last bunch of years and then change the standard.

Good lord havent we all gotten used to the current system.

Now TSA is going to have to whip out rulers.

Somebody in the knife industry paid somebody a sh#t pot full of money to change this rule.
