What does the brain trust have to say about living in Paso Robles, CA (or nearby)?

Paso Robles is not a raging metropolis. It is 30 minutes or so from SLO which is a fun college town, but small. You would not be too far from the ocean.

Pretty, small, tranquil. Great for a geezer, young family, etc. Might be a little quiet for a young guy. Depending on field, I wouldn't imagine there's a zillion jobs.

Well, its in California... Sorry. I can understand the nice weather, but the politics just rub me completely wrong.

What is your degree in, and what kind of job do you want?

Quite a change from NC to Paso Robles, CA. I had family that lived there for many years & have a sister who lives in Atasccadero (means pig wallow in Spanish) 10 miles south of there. It's right at 27 miles from north of San Luis Obispo a really charming town with a university campus. All the towns are small, including SLO, but the area is awsomely beautiful if you like small town, rural type areas - open, rolling hill area with tons of oaks. I would have loved to live there myself. I believe you studied gun smithing, or something like that & I don't know anything about employment or business in that area for that type of work. My sister owns a property management company in the area. If you might need some help from her if you do move there, let me know. She's been there for close to 50 years & knows a lot of people and a lot about the area.

Thank you so far. This is a second career so I am not as young as most college students. Yes Marv, I am studying gunsmithing. Weatherby is based there and has a current opening. They might not want to wait for me to finish in July but you never know. Have concerns myself about the politics in CA. Live in a really quiet area right now so that will not be too big of a problem!

I didn't know about Weatherby being located there. Go for it, but I'd definitely try to manage to finish your schooling. You'll love the area. As far as the politics are concerned, I just try to arrange my life to try to insulate myself from it as much as possible. Rural areas are affected less. If you go, my sister might be able to help you get settled.

Middle of nowhere. 3 hours to LA or SF. Hot as hell in the summer, like 100F+. Great if you like open country, trees and nature. I have a friend that owns 30 acres there. He has to commute 2 hours to Santa Barbara.

Unless they offer you some crazy money, it may not be worth it. Look at living costs, taxes, idiot policy and government, etc.. I left CA last year and couldnt be happier.

It takes him two hours to get to SB from PR? Your friend must drive really slow.

He's north of PR.

Gogar is right, btw. North Carolina is really nice. My uncle moved there from Los Angeles a few years back to do movie work. Apparently the industry is blowing up there.

That would make a little more sense. I used to do SFV-SLO and reverse in 2.5 hours routinely.

But hey, theres always Solvang..

It is a GREAT area to live in if you have a job there. CA has the big cities (LA, SF and maybe Sac). The rest is the boonies and quite nice. Not that different from NC. I don't think this would be a crazy move. I'd live in Paso Robles in a heart beat. The pig hunting up there is great. Wineries, coast, fairly close to Laguna Seca and the Sierra Nevada.

IMHO you have to be nuts not to move to a state for its gun laws. I am not happy with CA gun laws, but they don't keep me from living here. Same for taxes and politics. It still is a great state to live in and make a great living if you can find a job that pays well.

I have been visiting that area frequently over the last 15 years. My wife's family has a place in Cambria that she has holidayed at since childhood. So we try to stop in when we visit Cal. Great break for me from the intensity of SoCal.

It is a wonderful part of the state, rural, scenic, great driving roads, friendly relaxed folks. It may be hot at P R in the summer but the temps nearer the coast are cooled by the ocean breezes.

Seems like a good part of Cal. to settle in if you don't need a big city near by.

Thanks everyone. I think I will submit a resume. Although I do have concerns that Weatherby might not want to wait for me to graduate (July) and with the taxes and firearms restrictions in California in general.
