I can't imagine that the transmission is toast on that Boxster, it just doesn't seem consistent. I think you should price doing/getting the clutch replaced and see if it makes sense. You know he already turned down $8000, try offering him $8500 and tell him you think it needs a new clutch ASAP. Maybe that will tempt him enough to bite?
Speaking of Saabs, if you can find a 9-3 Viggen they are fantastic cars. 250 HP stock, 30+ MPG, the last Saab that was really even partially designed by Saab. Cure the notorious torque steer with a few simple bolt on modifications and enjoy. I had a 1997 900SE (9-3 predecessor), it was a freaking rocket on the highway with the addition of a boost controller and returned an easy 32-34 MPG. Also very, very well made. http://automobilesdeluxe.tv/wp-conte...onvertible.jpg |

So why does my Miata have a hard top? Oh yeah, because I work in the hood. |

It would also have to be a 75 or earlier to avoid smog. Nice ones are $$$ then! G |

Jonesing for a ragtop - suggestions???
Timely thread. In my circle of friends, we are jockeying for this. Sucks for me as I am the poorest one, and the only married one. Ice cube chance in hell. Haha.

Nice. I really like the uniqueness and price. But that is all I know!

OWP - you aren't helping here! I guess that's to be expected if you go on a car board. I haven't checked the vin yet for carfax. I will keep you posted.
Can't find any good stickshift Saabs locally. Also did not meet the spousal approval in terms of looks ... G |
I thought you were the one driving it, so how it looks to her should not matter.
I kid, really. |
If you go $10k and two seats, suddenly you open up these:

That car just seems flimsy. Not easy to find here from a mature owner. Definitely easy to work on and honda reliability! G |
You darn well better pick the right color. does she look good in red or yellow?
I did not care for the S 2000. Great car though. |
I think they're actually very robust but I agree, hard to find one that hasn't had the Fast & Furious treatment.
|
I can't find anything half way decent on the S2000 under 12k. Now we are getting into M3 E46 territory, which I'd much prefer - it would even meet the 4 seat requirement.
I ran the carfax on that S. It is a mess. 4 owners. Car was in Colorado until 2006, albeit with low miles driven there. Shows an accident: |
Z3 or Z4 imho...

Needless to say, I am passing. With a carfax like that, the car just isn't worth the money, even when I fix the shifting. Not terribly nice of the seller to try to hide this. Not smart either - 95% of any buyers will pull the report before buying. Nice base Boxsters are still $10k. I can't get that excited about them. I am going to look at Mustangs and Camaros again now. ;) G |
Accident doesn't personally bother me, probably more of my cars have accident history than not. Hiding the accident however - hell no. Definitely reason to pass, what else is he hiding?
Have you driven a base Boxster? It's really easy to underestimate them. The car is far better than the sum of its parts. |
I don't know OWP, if the door is FUBAR to where they couldn't get the window and door lock to work right?
Yes, major disappointment in the seller. He of course isn't required to tell me anything, but he had some rock chip damage stories why the car was partially repainted that were definitely told to mislead me. I would have been much happier with the truth and a couple of pictures of the damage before repair. Not sure what to look at next. Nothing good is close by. This area has a lot of traffic, so driving 4 hours to look at a car is a nightmare. I will limit myself to cars close by for now. G |
