And who is to say at this point that with a push of a button the top does not raise a couple of inches, rotates to an incline angle, and retracts into the back seat area.

It look like this does have some kind of retraction. See these shutlines? They look the same as the cabriolet.

Cool, and it got me thinking - so I did a search on the competition.

IMHO the 991 Targa would only be cool if both the center section and the rear window section could be removed. Maybe the rear window can duck into the retracted decklid? Would be the closest thing to a retractable hardtop, esp if the center section can fold in half and be stowed in the frunk.

HardDrive 12-16-2013 05:55 PM

If it has a removable rear window, then what is the point? Its a convertible with a wonky looking rollbar?

kach22i 12-16-2013 06:14 PM

The more I look at the Porsche top, the more it looks like the Lotus solution.

In a leaked dealer presentation, a slide seems to feature the new 911 Targa showing off its fully open central panel, which looks like something you'd lift out and place in the trunk. But then one line sticks out:

Fully automatic roof system to satisfy customer demands for comfort.
Willtell, where did you get the bottom image of yours, the A-B function diagram?

onewhippedpuppy 12-16-2013 07:08 PM

I vote very cool, especially as a power targa. Modern buyers of a $100k+ car aren't going to want to manually release levers, climb out, lift off a roof panel, and store it somewhere.

tangerine911S 12-16-2013 07:16 PM

I love it. I think the last few targa designs were awkward and a little ugly.

I think it was on Rennlist someplace. I'll see if I can find the source.

I posted this on Rennteam over a year ago now and I think it was copied here on another thread in the 991 section about the targa earlier this year.

"The 'targa' panel section is already on the cabrio. Underneath the fabric cover is a hard composite roof panel. From the drawings it appears that the top of the roof bar telescopes upwards to let the targa panel slide beneath it then retract rearwards to stow under the clam behind the rear seats as it does on the cabrio. The roof bar will then presumably close back down leaving the original roll hoop look. The parts of the roll bar that appear to remain attached to the rear glass are likely just the decorative side panels that hide the hydraulic mechanism, that allows the top of the bar to lift up and down, when the roof cycle of opening or closing is completed.

It should be quite a cost effective system to engineer as it appears to use the same Z frame roof scissor frame section and same rear clam opening mechanism as the cabrio. Presumably the rear glass window will have to be made from fairly lightweight material (polycarbonate perhaps?). The lifting targa roof bar is the new and more complex part of the design.

I've done a quick sketch to show this movement."

SuzyF found this patent application recently which partially supports my original view on how the roof will work. It looks like the targa bar does not need to raise as the roof mechanism lifting apparatus only needs the corner sections of the bar to open outwards. The targa panel then lifts up and over the bar and the corner panels then close back down.

I don't particularly care for the car as presented in the original post (the disguised test mule car), but the other pictures of the Targa, I like a lot...

dave 911 12-18-2013 12:37 PM

Looking at the cool retract mechanism, now I REALLY like it :).

kach22i 12-18-2013 12:57 PM

Has anyone figured out why they would go for a cloth look on a top which would work just as well with a hard-shell material?

I mean they are not folding it, right?

A carbon fiber top would look trick is all I'm saying.
