991 Targa Caught Testing...spy shots

Disguised as a convertible, the Targa design will incorporate a removable center roof section and a Targa roll-bar that helps to give the car more of a classic look.

The 997 targa was literally perfect. The targa bar doesn't strike me as something it'd want on my 100k car.

Agreed, also, If I spend that much money I would expect to press a button to open the roof. That looks like a manual top, which was cool in the 70's-80's, but to have opening levers and have to store it behind the seats would not be cool.

speeder 03-14-2013 09:32 PM

Why would anyone want this? When they already make such a beautiful cab with a top that goes up and down with the flick of a switch and has roll-over protection?

speeder 03-14-2013 09:33 PM

The 991 cab has possibly the best looking rag top I've ever seen.

Yeah. I can't figure this out. The recent targas have looked great. This one is just wrong.

BReif61 03-15-2013 04:14 AM

Interesting as a novelty; don't think I'll see many "in the wild," however.

Rich76_911s 03-15-2013 04:54 AM

Well appears I am in the minority but I like the idea. I'd really like it if they followed Ruf's model and go totally throwback with a soft window targa. Unfortunetly for them I'm about 100K short of being able to buy one. . .

I like it too.

And who is to say at this point that with a push of a button the top does not raise a couple of inches, rotates to an incline angle, and retracts into the back seat area somehow.

The lines work better than any Targa before it, which may cause coupe lovers to worry about their status in life.;)

72T 03-15-2013 05:36 AM

I'm a traditional targa guy. I liked the slide back roof well enough, but those cars still had bars across the window area that messed up the look. If I was buying a new 911, I would certainly consider this.

Bars across the top of the door windows don't mess up the looks, they extend the lines of the car without interruption.

I drove a Geo Tracker for nearly 20 years, and it never quite felt like an open top with those bars there. That is what the 993 Targa and water pumper 911's Targa's suffer from as well.

It is the experience from inside the car, not the outside that a potential owner should be concerned about - in my opinion.

A bird in a cage is not free, he can only pretend to be.

KevinTodd 03-15-2013 05:45 AM

I like it also--but I think all of us that do are just Targa guys to begin with. To each his own....I do agree that the 991 is gorgeous.

plumb4u2 03-15-2013 05:53 AM

that green Ruf car is smokin hot

dave 911 03-15-2013 06:22 AM

Count me in as a 'like' also. I think it looks great with the lines of the car, and is a great nod to the old-school classic targa look - it makes the car look more like a Porsche, and less like everything else on the road these days. . . .

And yeah, I'm a targa guy also :)

cantdrv55 03-15-2013 07:11 PM

The second this new targa rolls off the showroom floor, our air cooled targas will increase in resale.

PorscheGAL 03-16-2013 05:27 AM

I like it. Of course, as a Targa owner, I am biased. I am glad to see a return to old look of the entire section coming off.

exc911ence 03-17-2013 03:51 PM

Since full cabriolets are for trophy wives and hairdressers, it's nice to see Porsche offering real men an open-top option.

And no, that was not meant to be in green. :D

I hope they sell a crap-load of them.

It look like this does have some kind of retraction. See these shutlines? They look the same as the cabriolet.

IMHO the 991 Targa would only be cool if both the center section and the rear window section could be removed. Maybe the rear window can duck into the retracted decklid? Would be the closest thing to a retractable hardtop, esp if the center section can fold in half and be stowed in the frunk.

HardDrive 12-16-2013 05:55 PM

If it has a removable rear window, then what is the point? Its a convertible with a wonky looking rollbar?

kach22i 12-16-2013 06:14 PM

The more I look at the Porsche top, the more it looks like the Lotus solution.

In a leaked dealer presentation, a slide seems to feature the new 911 Targa showing off its fully open central panel, which looks like something you'd lift out and place in the trunk. But then one line sticks out:

Fully automatic roof system to satisfy customer demands for comfort.
Willtell, where did you get the bottom image of yours, the A-B function diagram?

onewhippedpuppy 12-16-2013 07:08 PM

I vote very cool, especially as a power targa. Modern buyers of a $100k+ car aren't going to want to manually release levers, climb out, lift off a roof panel, and store it somewhere.

tangerine911S 12-16-2013 07:16 PM

I love it. I think the last few targa designs were awkward and a little ugly.

I posted this on Rennteam over a year ago now and I think it was copied here on another thread in the 991 section about the targa earlier this year.

"The 'targa' panel section is already on the cabrio. Underneath the fabric cover is a hard composite roof panel. From the drawings it appears that the top of the roof bar telescopes upwards to let the targa panel slide beneath it then retract rearwards to stow under the clam behind the rear seats as it does on the cabrio. The roof bar will then presumably close back down leaving the original roll hoop look. The parts of the roll bar that appear to remain attached to the rear glass are likely just the decorative side panels that hide the hydraulic mechanism, that allows the top of the bar to lift up and down, when the roof cycle of opening or closing is completed.

It should be quite a cost effective system to engineer as it appears to use the same Z frame roof scissor frame section and same rear clam opening mechanism as the cabrio. Presumably the rear glass window will have to be made from fairly lightweight material (polycarbonate perhaps?). The lifting targa roof bar is the new and more complex part of the design.

I've done a quick sketch to show this movement."

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y14...Mechanism4.jpg

SuzyF found this patent application recently which partially supports my original view on how the roof will work. It looks like the targa bar does not need to raise as the roof mechanism lifting apparatus only needs the corner sections of the bar to open outwards. The targa panel then lifts up and over the bar and the corner panels then close back down.

I don't particularly care for the car as presented in the original post (the disguised test mule car), but the other pictures of the Targa, I like a lot...

dave 911 12-18-2013 12:37 PM

Looking at the cool retract mechanism, now I REALLY like it :).

kach22i 12-18-2013 12:57 PM

Has anyone figured out why they would go for a cloth look on a top which would work just as well with a hard-shell material?

I mean they are not folding it, right?

A carbon fiber top would look trick is all I'm saying.
