SWAT officer attracts ridicule after he’s pictured with his rifle sight on backwards
![]() A SWAT team in upstate New York is being mocked as an example of the difference between military and police training after an officer was captured peering through a backwards sight on his combat rifle. As users on the military Reddit were quick to point out when the image was posted, the reverse sight makes it effectively useless. Users mocked the SWAT officers training and some went so far as to question the motives of some of the men serving in local law enforcement. The officer is using a 'military style' assault weapon with a close quarters combat sight that costs roughly $500. 'It's disturbing to think that 1) none of his buddies corrected it, and 2) he's in a real-life situation with his optic on backwards, which means he's never fired that rifle with the optic on it, which means it isn't zeroed and he thought it was OK to show up to a gunfight with an unzeroed weapon,' wrote one Reddit user. The image came from a report on WKTV about an overnight standoff between law enforcement and an alleged killer hiding in building in Herkimer, N.Y. Despite the backwards sight, the standoff ended with the gunman killed and no reports of innocent bystanders being accidentally shot by SWAT. I am sure most of these guys are squared away. Maybe this particular one is "new".

Sad to say this is likely due to training or lack there of. These optics can be installed forwards or backwards with two thumbscrews in seconds and if a guy was under fire or other duress, errors are common. You'd think SWAT guys would undergo some sort of training scenario where they have to perform simple actions while bullets are flying over there heads. I bet they don't.
The same thing happens with those who practice dry firing with their auto handguns. Rack it back and take a shot each time over and over and you'll be doing the same in a gunfight. Here is a FBI study that shows criminals generally are better trained than cops when the SHTF. It's a long pdf link so it should please rwebb types. http://freedomsadvocate.com/files/ref/FBi-ViolentEncounters-AStudyofFeloniousAssaultsonAmericasLawEnforcementO fficers-2003.pdf

That first pic also makes me wonder why there is a raised gas block on a flat top receiver and a red dot sitting below the front sight as well

Hummm, after seeing this I went and checked my last remaining holo sight and what did I find but the image shows from either side so unless this one is one directional the way it is mounted should not matter? It is a tad further away than normal????
As for the tall front sight and gas block, on the one AR I had with the tall block it did not matter, but that was possibly because I always shot with both eyes open and the front sight "disappeared". My long barreled AR had a low gas block so it was never an issue. |

It will work forwards or backwards, but it is very hard to make adjustments with it mounted backwards.

I don't know anybody that goes to call-outs in jeans and a long sleeve t-shirt. Probably an investigator with a tac vest and rifle.
