Cars have ashtrays so why do smokers flick their butts out the window?
Never understood this. Any smokers here care to explain?

either way..flip them out one by one, or dump that big pile out next to the car discreetly.
i see both often.

Pet peeve of mine too. It really ticks me off to see people throwing their butts (i.e., trash) out of the window. I'm sure it is because they don't want to clean out their ashtray.
Years ago I was working in my yard & a teen girl drove by my house. She slowed down, opened the driver's door & dumped her full ashtray on the street right in front of my house. I got in my car, followed her about 1 block to her house & asked her to go back & clean it up. She did.

So they can air-freshen the car and sell it as smoke-free in a few years.....

Smokers in general seem oblivious to the impacts of their habit. The one that gets to me is butts on the beach. Folks will sit down on a nice stretch of beach and enjoy the moment. Have a smoke or three, stick the butts in the sand like it is an ashtray. once their moment is over they get up and walk off leaving a circle of butts in the sweet spot they just enjoyed, I don't get it.

put a five cent deposit return on each butt, and make it so a new pack cannot be bought without turning in the twenty used "empties".
you would never have to see another dumped ashtray or butt flicker. |

On the very rare occasions when I smoked in a car, I always had a water bottle or beer can for tossing butts. Though I will confess to having tossed out the window a few times when I belatedly realized I didn't have a recepticle with me. I'd never use the ashtry in a car for such a thing. That's where I keep change. Otherwise, I have never even thought of littering anywhere. I really will carry trash around for a while until I find a place to properly dispose of it.

Do cars still have ash trays? I know the past few i have purchased haven't.
It totally annoys me when I see someone do it. |

You have to agree though, the ash trays in these cars are pretty nicely designed. Nice and big and right in front of the right hand - positioned just right. Metal grate thing to shape the ash to your liking. Much better than the newer cars, much smaller, too close to the seats. I don't smoke, however, if I did, I would never ash in it because it would stink up the car and make a total mess.
I especially hate when the car in front flicks the cig, and I get the smell of ass in my car as I drive over past it. |

Good point...no ashtray in my '09 Mustang. No lighter, just 12v. power sources.

Not making excuses for smokers, as Rick pointed out a water bottle can serve as an ashtray. As far as I know newer cars do not come with ashtrays. My GF has a 2008 Fusion which I recently noticed has no ashtray or cigarette lighter. When I got my 2002 Suburban these items were options .Regardless, it is the individuals responsibility to lawfully dispose of their trash.

1) Lack of ash tray in new cars. (I am sure you coud buy an insert to the coin / tray location if you bothered, but most people don't want to admit that they are heavy smokers.)
2) Keep the car clean (resale) 3) Don't look at your trash, reminding yourself how many cigs you really put down. This one may be the biggest reason. I bought a smoker's car (2 years old) before. The ashtray was virgin. It sure stunk bad for a few months, but I knocked $500 off the price for it, so I was okay tolerating the smell. G |

All that and more.
Smokers are bottom feeders (I used to smoke) who have little concern about what they are putting into their bodies, why do you think they would for a moment ponder what they flick out of their cars? Anyone who smokes now has no self awareness or discipline, zippy. They obviously care nothing about themselves, why should you expect them to care about your lawn?

I recently bought a new Jeep Wrangler and one that I considered had the optional "smokers package".....a $45 cost for a plastic ashtray that fit in the cupholder, and a lighter.
Just this morning I looked over at the car next to me. It was a mama and her three little kids. Windows rolled up tight and mama smoking like a fiend. I was so pissed. That is child abuse!

Some very broad strokes you're painting with there, Seahawk.
To answer the original question, most cars don't come with ashtrays anymore...and some people are oblivious to the effects a lit cigarette butt can have on the environment (living in Arizona, can you say brush fire?). I'm a smoker; trying to kick the habit. Being in the Army for so long I think has made me a more "respectable" smoker. We stick our used butts in our pockets until we're around a trash receptacle where they can be properly disposed of. Habit carried over into my personal, civilian life. Car, I use bottles like Rick mentioned earlier. As far as having a "smoker's car" I've always gotten compliments on how good my cars look and smell; most people are beyond shocked to learn I smoke in my vehicles.

My blab: Why do we still have the big cigarette power supply in new cars? Bulky ill fitting for plugs anyways.
Years ago, a friends father was busted on a rural / country road for tossing a cig butt out the window. Fined for littering! Ps. to Rick - Having an open beer can, even as garbage and empty get you a nasty fine in some states and considered zero tolerance open liquor.
