I did my road test on some street legal Suzuki dirt bike as part of the MSF course. I got 100% on everything and was by far the best rider in the class. One woman fell and broke her ankle, one guy was so bad, he was told to leave and one instructor dropped his bike and did a good slide when he grabbed the wrong bike. He had found a braking problem, parked the bike next to an identical one and then grabbed the bad one before doing another demo.

When I bought my BMW R1150R in NJ two weeks later and rode it back to VA, I was way, way underprepared for that. It was a thrill, but I was not ready for it. I can't imagine someone with no two-wheel experience getting their M endorsement on a Can-Am and then, thinking they're fine, jumping on a friend's two wheeler for a Sunday ride. I have come so close to losing it in just a parking lot when I had to do a quick stop and hit sand or had to avoid a car while leaning. You don't have to worry about that stuff on a Can-Am and it will make you drop a two-wheeler if you don't know what you're doing.

Tolerance guys, tolerance. 2 wheeled motorbikes are dangerous. Some people want a bit of the thrill without all the risk :)

But they have every bit as much risk, if not more, and not nearly the same benefits as two-wheelers.

Over here, in Ontario Canada, you do not get a full "M" Class licence if you take the test on a three wheeled machine. It is classed as a restricted "M".

Heck no, they're really not. You accelerate on a motorcycle/sidecar combination, and the bike tends to go around the sidecar. You brake on a combo, and the sidecar comes around the bike... You can corner really, really, hard in one direction (until the back wheel lifts) - and nowhere near so hard in the other, because the sidecar wheel lifts (although you can corner harder with someone to act as ballast, or, ideally, who's prepared to fling themselves at the road while hanging on to the sidecar - these folks are known as "monkeys" in racing, because they climb all over the thing).

Maybe modern ones have driven/braked wheels. Dunno.

Friend of mine took his test about 30 years ago with a Panther combo; it was snowing significantly. Examiner came out, looked at him, looked at the address on his license, asked how far he'd come that morning (about 12 miles) and just filled out a pass slip and gave it to him. When asked, he just shrugged and said "well, you got here - obviously competent to drive it".

I don't think it is accurate to say that the three wheelers have "every bit as much risk" as the two wheelers. As far as crash worthiness goes, maybe so. But the three wheelers are probably safer as far as solo accidents go, if only because they aren't as prone to go down in sketchy road conditions. You said yourself how much more risk there is of dropping a motorcycle.

Ghey. because top speed is only 20mph more than the Piaggio 500's 90mph, and most importantly....it doesn't lean.

i plan on being one of those guys still riding at 80. but acknowledge that my balance might not be so great about that time.

a side car is the obvious (dog friendly) solution.

i don't get those trikes. they maximize every disadvantage of a motorcycle. with none of the benefits.

A guy at work has a Can-Am. He's our CFO and is retiring on Friday. 65 and looks and acts 75. The trike suits him perfect.

How is a trike worse than a bike with sidecar? Seems much better handling. Admittedly the passenger has to ride behind not to the side.

My brothers and mom and I all had 944's for a year, it was fun to take the four of them out and drive a row of matching old slow poke cars. To each their own.

That is all I can say that is nice and I won't say more.

There's a young high-schooler that rides a Can-Am around town. Even Mrs. Z said, "At first glance, I thought that was cool. But in reality, not so much." I believe the guy has one of those helmets that the whole chin guard can be pivoted over his head - and he rides around like that.

He would only look more cool if he has a pink izod shirt on...

I never owned a sidehack but always kind of wanted one. When I was restoring a couple pre 15 bikes I met Mike Parti, an old sidehack racer, boy was he banged up. At the time he was restoring bikes for Leno and we went over to his place to look at all the toys. Leno has some nice stuff.

Just embrace the ghey, there's nothing wrong with that. Just like embracing the Porsche owner stereotype. And step off your high, um, scooter. To each his own.

When I get too old to ride I'll just hang out in my open-door garage watching Law & Order reruns.
