I'll admit that was a consideration when I was looking for one (I'm 60). But the thing really is a hoot to ride, though of course at a much slower pace than with a 'real' bike. But there's lots of back roads and gravel roads around me. And it would be nice if it snowed here more often.

I wouldnt ride one, (trike, can am) but they have their place in the world of wheels. I think if your worried about your strength ability to hold a large cruiser upright at a stop, then a trike may be the ticket. They definitly say "elderly" to me, and I think Id rather be the old guy with a hot convertable.

This response makes sense to me, buy what would you consider a "hot convertible"? Aging minds want to know!

When I had to stop riding my R1100RT I got a little Z-3. The Z is not as maneuverable but it's a lot safer. The trikes are not as maneuverable, but aren't any safer.

This freedom of the road on a bike is stuff nonsense unless you have a death wish. By the time I put the helmet and armored riding suit on I was in a cocoon completely separated from my environment. In the Z-3 I can smell the air and feel it on my face and if a deer jumps in front of me (happens a lot around here) it doesn't mean instant death.

Not a fan, it's not a real bike. My 67 year old father in law has been spending his retirement going on Iron Butts on his assortment of bikes so I don't really get how age is a factor... if you are old enough for that to be an issue, riding might not be for you. I see plenty of the older generation running around comfortably on Gold Wings and other cruisers.

The only three wheeled vehicle I would consider getting is a T-Rex. Those things are made for hooning.:D

As for the can-am one, to each his own, but I do think they look a little silly. I like the feeling of riding a bike on a twisty back road with my footpegs inches from the ground. I doubt you can get the same rush riding a trike.

I don't get the three wheel reverse trike... other than a brilliant bit of marketing...

I do get the why take all the risk without the freedom of two wheeling.

However I bet they are great fun to ride (drive?).

And as car guys (and ladies) we embrace small cars and big cars, new cars and old cars, low tech cars and high tech cars... and here we are bashing a three wheeler? Huh?

As Tervuren eludes... we all know the saying about Porsche's and porcupines... right?

I say do whatever makes you feel good. If its riding a trike, then do it. Because seriously, at the end of the day, the fact of the matter is you are still old. I am not saying that as a mean thing. I am saying that because of experience. I drive a minivan and all my friends made fun of me. They still drove around in their big Escalades... With baby seats in the back. At the end of the day, you are still a mom, no matter how you dress it. So do it how you want. Drive a Porsche. Ride a bike. Ride a trike. Heck, drive a Mustang. Do whatever you want because somebody is gonna give their two cents of how dumb you look. Just nod your head and move along.

Personally, I think it's awesome when a see an old person or fat person riding around in one of those. The old person, they still have fire in them and is gonna find one way or another to get that feeling on a bike no matter what. And yeah, it may not be the same but better than a wheelchair. I respect that. And the fat person? I would rather see them on a trike than on one of those motor wheelchair things at Walmart buying more hostess cupcakes. And the old guys driving Porsches? Well, I know they have fire and good taste. ;)

And a hot convertible is a hot convertible. Doesn't make the driver any hotter... You got to have that on your own.

I think they are great little vehicles within their market niche. If their owners enjoy them, that's all that really counts, isn't it? I'll assume they made an informed decision, weighing the benefits and drawbacks against their needs, and decided these things are a good fit. Folks that are either too old, or have some sort of physical limitation, or are intimidated by a two wheeler, of just plain prefer one of these - what's the big deal? Different strokes for different folks.

I prefer a different sort of bike myself; I'm currently reassembling my Ironhead Sportster - high compression, big cams, open drag pipes, kick start only - does that somehow make me more "badass" than a Can-Am rider? C'mon, I'm a middle aged man, a family man, an engineer. Or if that one doesn't, maybe my hot rod '93 900 Super Sport Ducati does. If that still doesn't, then surely my twin plugged, MFI 3.0 liter powered '72 911 does. Yeah right - I'm stil the same old guy. And if I dared hop on one of these Can Ams, half of you would think I'm "ghey"? Weird...

but honestly, i dont mind them. there is a guy riding around one near work, with one fake leg. he loves it, and it keeps the wind in his face. i'm a fan of this application.

If other people like them enough to buy/ride them...great. That doesn't mean I don't have my own personal opinion on them. Theres a forum someplace right now talkiing about how great Hyundais are and how gay Porsches are.... to each their own.
