Dog question for you....

We have a neighbor a woman about 30 yo who has quite a large dog that sometimes pulls a tire on a rope down our back lane. The back lane is still snow covered. The dog does not look happy doing thing it. So I said to her what are you doing with that dog? She said it is in training so the dog can pull her on her scooter!
So I said really. My wife and I agreed that dog should be allowed to be a dog. What do you think?I am guessing the dog is about 70lbs. Is this cruelty to animals?

I would say whether it is cruelty or not depends upon the woman and the dog.

How is she treating the animal? Is she driving it with threats or praising and rewarding its efforts? What is the breed and condition of the animal? A born & bred sled dog will drive everyone around it if it can't work off its energy.

Would yo feel any different if you saw her hitching up a horse to pull a drag in preparation for a competition?

Best

Is it pulling from a harness or from a collar?

Some dogs need a job and maybe this one is a puller.

Pics of the neighbor? (someone was going to ask so I thought I would just get it over with)

She sounds just like a million other stupid humans who shouldn't be allowed to own a pet, let alone breed.

Other than that.....

I would not bother with a pic of that neighbor. Perhaps the dog though!

Yes I am in agreement with you Janet on this. Normally when you see a sled with a man on it you see many sled dogs pulling it not just one. Yes I live in a strange neighborhood. The world has got crazier though.

I think that I will ask her if she thinks the dog is having any fun?

She can borrow Deuce. He's famous for pulling ATV's, pulling porch posts out and demolishing his favorite chew toys(motorcycle tires). We try not to tie him to anything even for a moment.

If the dog in question doesn't seem happy or cooperate with the owner, then something is wrong. But perhaps the owner is attempting it as a one time thing and nothing more.

Our dear lab, now long gone was a sweetie but had an incredible will and strength for pulling. Would retrieve large tree branches out of the water, drag large fallen branches while I'd be tree trimming, etc.. Often barked at kids on skateboards but only to get their attention for play. With the harness on, she would pull those kids hard! Comical. For a running companion, she was a handful but outstanding. In our open land, she was fine without a leash but if I was in public park and on trails (leash required), you would get a strong swift 5 miles in before her breaking point to finally ease up! Years back a girlfriend wanted to take a run with her alone.... after warning her and a good luck, she came back with a mad face on... LOL.

Perhaps the dog is about 60-65 lbs, does not look that solid - a mixed breed.
Woman about 130 lbs. Like I said the dog does not look happy. My black lab was about 65 lbs(now deceased) and would have had a better chance of pulling a tire. This woman and my old lab had a lot in common - both nut jobs.

a 130 lbs woman on a scooter throws a ball ahead and our black lab (RIP) would have had her approaching warp speed. her scooter better be running some major negative camber.

that dog would pull on a leash. at least for the first 3 years. hiking with him was awesome on the uphills.
