30 hp outboard overheating
Trying to get the new to me 1987 Johnson outboard running. Today I removed/rebuilt the carb with OEM carb rebuild kit. I did this because for the last week or so when I went to start her she would fire but wouldn't stay running. Removed the carb and soaked her in cleaning solution for 30 minutes. Blew compressed air though all the passages and buttoned her up. Primed it and turned the key she fired right up and ran good for about 2 minutes and then the overheat buzzer went off I turned her off. I was running it with muffs and a garden hose, has a splatter of water coming out but not a stream. The water pump impellar/housing was just replaced two weeks ago. Assuming I did the water pump correctly do I have a stuck thermostat or plugged passages ?

Umm, it should be a stream.

My money is on plugged passages. I had a 1978 'Rude that had a similar issue. I pulled the heads and cleaned everything. Replaced the gaskets, thermostats, impeller and lower unit seals and oil. Turned around and sold it to a friend who still uses it today.
Most O/B motors that I have seen of this type have a pretty simple thermostat block. It's a few bucks and a half hour to swap thermostats and gaskets out. I do believe that the water would still be pumping, just not being directed into the passages if your T-stats were failing closed. I really do think you need to look at your water passages.

Impeller the water pump?
The little rubber impeller on some outboards gets chewed up sometimes. Edit. Should read all of the previous posts....

Best bet the impeller, easy R&R......usually some wanker ran it w/o water.

I just replaced the impellar and pump housing two weeks ago and it has not run without water.

some outboards won,t draw water properly thru muffs. I wouldn,t look much further until I ran it in a barrel (a garbage pail will work) .

Agreed plus johsnon/evinrudes are notorious for having the over heat buzzer go off without any problems. Many people just disconect the buzzer. Put it in a trash can full of water. see how the stream looks.

Add Mariner 150s to the list...I only run on muffs long enough to get her fired prior to a trip (a cold natured beast after storage). Barely get a decent stream...does fine in the water...nature of the beast...

You could check for obstructions in the water outlet line. Used to get chunks of sand blocking the line right where it connect to the nipple where it goes through the shroud.
Does sound like lack of cooling water flow. Lime out may help to break up salt/corrosion blockages in the passages. Thats where I would start looking next. Then back to the search for the perfect fishing gear. Pipe cleaners just came to mind. Cheers Richard |
