If I could pry my wife away from my damn in-laws I'd be in the DFW area tomorrow. I love Texas, and hope to move there before they secede.:)

I travel quite a bit for business across the US. I was in DFW a few months ago on business. With all the construction, operational business (instead of shuttered doors), and general energy it felt like being in a foreign country. Like "Recession? What recession?"...

Really like the area east of DFW - out toward Nacadoches, etc. Quite lovely. Put us down as 'would flee to Texas.'

Texas has a lot of good things going for it. But some bad things too. A vast majority of the jobs created in the past 5 years were low wage with no benefits. And you pay for what you get - since taxes are low our education and healthcare coverage are poorly ranked.

We're not perfect - calling it a miracle is really if you only care about business and screw everything else. But we got a lot of good going for us. Except for the summers - it's damn hot.

It is not so much Texas as it is Texans, good people. It can be hard country, what with the various deadly snakes, spiders that can bite you and make your foot rot off, drought, hundred year floods every ten years, hurricanes, tornadoes, hail that could kill you if it hit you in the head. There are several colors worse than red on those doppler weather maps it turns out. Ice storms in the winter, implausible heat in the summer. I had always thought of 100% as the upper end of the scale. It is possible, through some combination of humidity, temperature amd Bermuda Triangle effect to have both the percent humidity and the degrees to be greater than 100. Fortunately, the high humidity keeps you from bursting into flames when the wind blows. Something about it keeps your head from going soft, unless of course you are on the meth, in which case you won't be around long anyway.

California is totally different. Mild weather, most of the bears and other dangerous bigger animals have been chased from the state, soft, easy country, except for the Mojave, which counts as Arizona, and the Mountains on the wrong weekend for weather.

Nice recitation of the left talking points. I think we have all heard these many times, even more as the West and the NE slide into a ruinous fiscal state.

Texas is a great place to own a business, but not a very good place to be someone else's employee.

What cracks me up is that there are (at least) two different kinds of Texans. When I meet them, they either tell me that,

A) It's a great place, except for Austin. Or,

B) That it's a destination to skip, except for Austin. :D

Austin is unique. They have a tax me into oblivion philosophy that will one day ruin the city. They didn't build the F1 race track outside of the city for no good reason. Unfortunately, I think the city did annex the territory because it was not incorporated.

What is great, is that the nut jobs tend to centralize to the inner city and there is a vast area in out lying regions where normalcy exists.

We have room for expansion, and people tend to disperse from the city. No one really wants to live in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, or Austin. They want to live just beyond the political reach of the city.

Urban sprawl.

I'm so happy for reinforcing your faux political paradigms. I didn't realize being pro-healthcare and pro-education is a "left talking point". But if it is, I guess that means you're anti-education and anti-healthcare. Congrats.
