The power of a bull is what amazed me. They toss the guys around like rag dolls.
I haven't laughed as much at a youtube video in ages.

You have to be crazy to mess with a bull. Those people are lucky to be alive.

I thought I had heard that the bulls are killed at the end of these things. Very cruel and sad either way IMO. It is funny, however, to see the people getting owned

OK, so I kind of get it with the young guys. They are young and stupid and think that they are invincible. We kind of expect the young ones to do stupid crap like that. What I don't get is that there were old guys out there, guys that should have been old enough to know better. I'm not that old (42) and I think I'm absolutely old enough to know better. You absolutely would not catch me out doing that even if the prize for surviving was 72 virgins.
There were some really great moments in the vid and I didn't even get all of the way to the end. I think my favorite is when the guy is on the roof of the bus stop and thinks he's safe right up until the bull jumps up on top of the bus stop and knocks him on his azz.

Although the video seems to be shot in the Azores islands in Portugal, this is what we call in Spain and "encierro" and is the low-cost version of the famous San Fermin in Pamplona of Hemingway fame.
Basically the tradition goes that the bulls are to be properly bullfighted in the arena in the afternoon so they need to be transported in the morning across the town from their pens to the arena and the locals would either pursue and/or trail them. You can see how this degenerates into "amateur street bullfighting", especially when alcohol is involved. There are many variants of this "sport", some of them including torches attached to the bull's horns, fireworks on its back or even jumping from harbor docks into the sea when the bull comes close (the bull eventually follows and falls into the water too). Usually the bulls are not grown ups and the horns are shaved short so the bull loses accuracy with them. I have participated in several of this "events" when I was younger although I was sensible enough not to come close to the bull and be near cover at all times. Every year there are injuries and even fatalities all over the country although less than Darwin would expect. |
