Porsche in LMP-1 at Le Mans 2014
Porsche to compete in LMP-1 at Le Mans in 2014, but without the whiner.
Porsche have distanced themselves from reports that they have signed a deal with Mark Webber for 2014. The Australian has been on a rolling one-year contract with Red Bull for the past few years, but his future at the team was thrown into fresh doubt following the Malaysian Grand Prix after team-mate Sebastian Vettel ignored team orders and claimed a controversial race win ahead of him. Although Webber and Red Bull have rejected claims that he could walk away from the team this season, there have been rumors that he will join Porsche next year to lead their return on the World Endurance Championship and Le Mans 24 Hours. However, the sportscar maker has denied the speculation. "Mark Webber has not signed a contract with Porsche," Porsche's motorsport spokesman told Sky Sports Online. "In 2014 Porsche will return to Le Mans and the Sportscar World Championship WEC in the highest class LMP1. Our 10 factory drivers are an excellent basis for our driver line-up. If we will add additional drivers will be decided later this year." Porsche dismiss Webber reports | Planet F1 | Formula One | News, Standings, Results, Features, Video |

Webber ran (and flew) for Mercedes back in the late 90's.
Porsche has a good stable of winning prototype drivers to choose from. Don't know why they would want to bring Webber in the mix. Outside of the name and some past experience what does he bring to the table?

I wonder if the LMP1 car will be built from the 918. With the diesels still in the mix, there has to be some real fuel economy in petrol cars to compete.
Would be surprising to me if Weber showed up as a driver, at first anyway. Agree with Aragorn too much in house talent that they are used to working with. Good news though, it will be fun to watch. Cheers Richard Last edited by tevake; 04-19-2013 at 07:03 PM.. |
